Ball Python

A friend at work breeds snake and said I could have one, should I get it? Any snake owners have advice?

They are a pain and do nothing. I raised one from a baby until it was about 3 feet long and realized I had a reptile who could care less about me and did nothing but eat an occasional mouse and hang out on a heatrock. About as exciting as sticking your toungue on a frozen light pole.

Used to have a couple when I was younger. If I wasn't in college right now and not allowed to have one, id get one in a heartbeat. Awesome pets

I had a few of them. great snakes to have. very docile and easy to take care of. they do not grow to large either

Ball Pythons are a great starter snake. They stay small and almost never bite. That's how they got the name "ball" python, because when scared or nervous they curl up into a ball rather than attacking. It's pretty cool, but they become domesticated easily and stop getting scared, so they stop curling up into the ball. About the only issue with ball pythons is that they're often VERY finicky eaters when they're babies. Many of them might refuse young mice and only eat preemie rats. Believe it or not to snakes mice have a very strong smell that rats don't have and balls are especially sensitive to it. They outgrow that after a while. When getting a young ball only get one that's eating well already.

I never understood keeping a snake as a pet, but if you like snakes.. go for it.

I've lived with several snakes and lizards over the years. Personally I don't see the appeal of reptiles as pets, but if you like the idea of it, a ball python is an ideal pet. They're docile and easy to maintain. They can be handled safely and comfortably with no problem.

I think that is part of the reason, to have one as a pet at least once, I like learning/experiencing new things that help enrich my life, and while a snake may not be a big part of that, it can at least be a small part of it. Already Ive learned some more information by reading up on them.

I still think its freaky that they can go with months and months, sometimes up to a year, without eating

I have a 2 friends that have pythons (not sure what kind). They absolutely love it. If you're interested I don't see why you shouldn't go for it.

Friend brought him in to work today, so now i have a Ball Python in a box next to me staying warm until I can take him home tommorrow morning after work.

I guess he has an albino recessive gene, not that it means much unless I decide to breed him.

I guess he hasnt been taught to eat dead food yet so he still eats live mice, we will see if he can get into the habit of eating frozen/thawed rats
