ball point mouse vs optical mouse

I've used optical mouse and I'm not impressed
slow response time, the type of mouse pad you use affects sensitivity greatly. using red, it is confused.
using black, it works best. using white it is slow.

ball mice get stuck, have moving parts you need to clean, are not very accurate, and break. i love optical mice, ive owned tons and never had any problems i sometimes dont even use a mousepad, currently im just using a sheet of paper that i take notes on as a mouse pad and it works fine

I love optical mice. Been a big fan of Logitech's. I generally used a piece of paper for a mouse pad, but then bought a funcpad some time ago and love it. between the sensitive mouse and it's surface maybe i'm getting something your not, but i doubt it.

Logitech Blue Optical -> Logitech MX300 (rIP 🙁 ) -> Logitch MX510.

I've use cheapo mice too, and i didn't like them. Had nothing to do with them being optical, they were just bad compared toe the better mice i had. Even a microsoft explorer mouse feels kinda cheap to me. *shrugs* to each his/her own.

The high quality mice have very nice response times. Like my LX700 kit's mouse. 🙂

Optical mice are definitely better. Ball mice are bulky to handle. Dust and scum accumulates in the inner mouse and weird things happen.

If you find your optical mouse unresponsive it's probably due to you having a poor optical mouse (Get logitech!)
Regular mouse pads that is good for ball mice may not be good for optical mouse

Even a piece of paper might work better

There are some specially designed optical mouse pads made of steel/fibre glass. They give your hand shivers so I won't recommend. Or just use a piece of paper fixed to the desk.

I know what you are talking about, those are symtoms of cheap mice. I have owned and used half of a dozen optical mice I can safely recommend MX518, MX510, or MX500. I am personaly using a Logitech MX 518 and have not experienced a skip yet, except for on UNEVEN surfaces; as long as your table does not have any un-even spots in it (from poor sanding, etc) you should be fine.

As for the PAD, I am using a 3M precise mousing surface with a wrist pad to prevent chaffing my hands and writs, it works like a charm. I found that the black one works best.


Also avalable with out a wrist pad.

what mouse were you using?

I've been all optical since the intellimouse explorer came out in 1999. I have since owned the intellimouse explorer v3, and a few of logitech wireless optical mice. My main mouse is the MX1000. I use a wireless optical trackball at work (my own).
