Baldur's Gate III in Development (Rumor)

That is the rumor

Sequel to Baldur's Gate 2 now in development?
Quoting a guy calling himself Achilleas, RPG Codex has word that, according to the latest issue of the PC Gamer UK, Baldur's Gate 3 is in development. Here is the quote: "I'll probably get into trouble for telling you this, but hey, I just can't resist. Baulder's Gate III is in the works. I can't really say much more, but a few details to guide your speculation: it's not being done by BioWare, and you won't be playing it for at least two years. You shouldn't expect anything classically isometric either, as it's being made by a company that believes in pushing technology forward".

Baldurs Gate is a popular franchise and Atari would do well to outsource a game with that name to be developed in order to milk it further. From the sounds of it (and based on their history of licensing Black Isle Studio games (the producers / publishers of The Baldur's Gate Series, although Bioware developed them) and the "pushing" of graphics further comment), if this rumor is true, I suspect (unfortunately) that the company they are speaking of is Bethesda.

I'll also put my chips onto bethesda... hopefully they realize that its not just another "oblivion". They better start from the ground up.

I suspect BGIII will suck. It's going to be totally disconnected from the original story, you won't be able to import your old character. I say, roll your own version using NWN or NWN2.

Oblivion wasn't a party game. If they are making a true BG game it should be party-based, which means an Oblivion clone would be pretty much impossible.

Not really.. Oblivion Online mod= party based questing. To a certain degree of course 😉 I can see them making a party based oblivion game...with maybe more instances and slightly upgraded graphics..wouldn't be that hard to rehash it.

It will also be interesting (and critical in my opinion) on what version of rules set BG3 will be based upon. 4.0 will be released this June; the previous versions were 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5.

Is 4.0 rule set what we can expect? From everything I have read on the latest incarnation it is almost a completely different game.

An Oblivion clone??? I want a real Baldurs Gate 3 made by Bioware with a large adventuring party.

My thoughts exactly. I wouldn't mind a Baldur's Gate III that was like Neverwinter Nights 1 but that would allow you to have a 6 person party and to control the party members' inventories, combat, and movement--just like in Baldur's Gate 2.

I suspect that the self-proclaimed "Baldur's Gate III" will have no relationship of any kind to Baldur's Gate I and II (heck, the story ended). They might as well just come up with a fresh name.

For all we know, they will. I mean this is apparently at least two years off, if it's even 100% true.

yeap. i would love it if was more off NWN then oblivion.

i don't want a obilvion clone. i want a BG game.

You know, some day I'm going to have to create a website on what I consider the travesties of gaming. Thats not to say BG3 would be on there... YET... but I don't like that news.

I don't know if I like the idea of Bethesda making another Elder Scrolls, Fallout 3, and BG3. Those three were distinctly different games for me and it's doubtful they could keep the distinct feeling of all three franchises intact. I shudder to think of all three game feeling similar.

I'd be highly wary of of someone making a post like this. No credability to speak of IMO. (not referring to Schadenfroh but the guy calling himself Achilleas) Rumor is all it is until we get info from a more reliable source. Not saying its impossible but just highly suspect.

This is truly exciting for me as the BG franchise is by far my favorite gaming franchise ever .. however, 2 years min, new devs, eh.. we'll see.

Could be untrue..

Seeing how horribly dumbed down and configured Oblivion was, I would fear for BG if it landed in the hands of Bethesda. However, this is all but speculation.

I would think Bethesda wouldn't been too keen on getting another group of RPG fans with high expectations - the fallout fans haven't been too kind to them.

I'd rather see a sequel for Planescape: Torment, or at least something set in that universe.

I wouldn't trust a PS:T sequel in the hands of just ANY developer.

I predict this will suck balls.

Unless a developer manages to magically recall all the original people its pretty much pointless to work on another Baldurs Gate game.

They should just try harder to make Neverwinter Nights 2 play like Baldurs Gate 2.
And I dont just mean the interface, but also the depth of the characters, the quests, and the world itself.
