Baldur's Gate 3...

Anyone know anything more than what I just read at EBWorld? If it does get finished I'll be one of the happiest gamers of all time .. The BG series is by far my favorite series of all time.. FANTASTIC games.. I only hope the rights issue gets resolved and this game can be finished!

Here is my understanding of the politics involved in the BG3 mystery, being the 2 supposed main factors behind the drama. When the relationship between Interplay and Bioware went sour part of their seperation agreement was Interplay kept the BG name and property. Bioware will most likely not be involved in another BG game's production unless another publisher comes up with the liscense and gives them the nod. Black Isle is rumored to have been working on BG3 for a fair amount of time but halted production when Interplay lost the Forgotten Realms liscense, as the reviewer on the EBgames site mentioned. Interplay is BROKE, they have been in danger of being delisted several times and are trading right now at about $0.14 a share. I don't honestly know what it would take for them to get the rights back, but as a near bankrupt company part of their strategy probably isn't to sink money into a bid war over liscensing trademarks. Maybe I am assuming too much and its just a snag, but the fact that Black Isle stopped development makes me think otherwise.
I, for one, am kind of worried about the whole fiasco. Bioware seemed to be a big part of the creativity behind the BG games. Without them what state will the sequel be in? I loved the Icewind Dale games, but they didn't have anything close to the amount of depth that the BG games did. They also made Planescape: Torment, which was awesome in a million ways, but still wasn't as epic as either BG was. Will Black Isle be able to pull it off alone if the whole property issue gets sorted out? It really is too bad that stuff like this happens, BG3 would most likely be an instant classic if the formula was left untouched.

Thanks for the great info, and I share your concerns. I'm worried that with such schism the sequal may not make it into production, and even if it does, that it will match the quality of I and II.

If Interplay have the BG name and are going broke, might it be possible that someone would buy the name and get Bioware to make a game so they could release a BG 3?

I would pray for that to happen (not for Interplay to go bankrupt but for Bioware to get back in the loop somehow) because it is probably the only way Bioware would be able to take part in the development. It looks as though Interplay is going the console route with the BG name for now, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance was a success and the sequel is due out soon. As long as Interplay is able to make money selling games with the Baldur's Gate name I doubt anyone else will have a crack at it.

I luv the music in BG, and the super positive aura of your actions. Its the only game, (bg and bg2) that i've beaten 4 times in a row.

I actually like the console version of BG developed by Snow Blind Studios, development was monitored by Black Isle for "Quality Assurance". Im looking forward to BGDA 2.

So yes it does look like thier going the console route with the BG name. I would love to see the BG series come back to the PC, and givin the quality of the console versions I wouldent be suprised if they let SnowBlind Studios bring us BG3 on the PC.......

We'll see...interesting topic

I agree that BGDA was fun and overall worth the while to play, but it was also done in a very different style. If and when BG3 comes out I just hope it has all of the things that made the first 2 great like NPCs with subplots, quests, and individual agendas, TONS of depth/replay value, the list goes on.
