Baldur's Gate 2 Vs. FX5900

I got an FX5900XT recently, and no matter what I do, BG2 won't run in fullscreen mode without the screen switching to ~320x200 and 4 colors. I can only see the upper left.
The latest patch is installed, reinstalling the game didn't help, I've tried the newest drivers as well as some older ones, but I can't solve the problem.

Does anyone with an FX still play BG2?

Update: the game works in full screen mode when I start Windows in safe mode. It's not really enjoyable, no sound effects at all...
I guess it works because the video card's driver (Forceware 5x.xx) is not loaded.

I still can't get it to work normally.
