Hello all, I was directed to ask here instead of the Bioware forums for help on this issue.

When I click install from the autorun the message pops: Unsupported 16 bit application. It says the game wont work on my version of windows (Windows 7 64 bit) but looking around, there are others with the same OS who are able to install the game just fine.

I have already tried all the basic stuff already (ie compatibility mode with autorun and setup.exe) and nothing seems to help. Any help would GREATLY be appreciated.

(here is a link to my thread in the bioware forums along with their suggestions to help possibly narrow it down)

You can not run 16 bit programs in 64 bit windows. That game may work in 32 bit Win 7, but it certainly will not work in 64 bit.

Best I can suggest is either a dual boot, or a good virtual machine. I believe VM Ware supports hardware acceleration.

Then are those people lying that say they are playing it fine on 64 bit systems?

Also, I installed Baldur's Gate 1 just fine, thats also a 16 bit program.

What are you talking about? I was playing it last year on a 64bit OS. From what I remember you need to browse the disk and manually run some installer.

I've got medical programs from the 80s running on my Win 7 work machine.

You just cant install it from the autorun. Just open up windows explorer and browse the cd and double click on the setup.exe file and it should install fine

I just tested it on my machine win7 ultimate 64bit

Ive been doing that, it gives me the same error. Could the reason be that you have a "better" version of windows than me?

I've run BG2 on both Vista 64-bit and Win7 64-bit. I have no idea what I did to get it to install, afaik I didn't run into any problems, though the auto-run may not have even come up so I might have gone in directly and installed from the file browser. Try running setup.exe (or whatever it is) as admin, and maybe in XP compatibility mode if its an option (right click > properties > compatibility).

Ive tried this many times as well. May I ask which version of the game you have? I have the 4 cd pack with BG 1 and 2 with the expansions. Maybe this is the problem?

I bought a combo pack with BG2 and the expansion, but no BG1 included. Purchased about 2-3 years ago off Amazon.

the edition of windows should not matter. I just tried it on my Win7 Pro 64bit and it works as well. mines the original collectors edition release back when it first came out

Don't know how, but I just did. I hadn't installed BG2 since moving to Win7, but it worked off the autorun and installed fine. Yeah, I was a little surprised. Played it for about an hour, no problems.

<-- Win7 64 Pro

Have you tried setting all the .exes in the install disc to run in XP compatibility mode, then trying setup again?

For what it's worth, I had absolutely no problems installing BG2 (and BG1, for use in BGT) multiple times in Vista x64 Home Premium.

It sounds like most of you are using the stand alone BG2 disks which is different than the re-release I have. I think that may be the problem...

As I recall, there was a pretty significant physical issue with one of the installation disks when BG2 was first released - are you using the original disks?

Strange, I was able to install BG2 on my laptop running windows 7 64bit without any issues.

That is so weird... I ran the game fine under:

- Vista Ultimate 64bit
- Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit RC
- Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

I got the 4 DVD version.

Sorry, no idea how to help you. You already tried all the things I could think of (setup.exe directly, compatibility mode). All I can tell you is that it works fine here, Win7 HP 64bit. Maybe your DVD is damaged and the system can't properly read the file? Try making .iso files out of your DVDs and then install from a mounted virtual drive?

Is it legal to download something you already own? Cause if it is, ill get the stand alone version that some of you have to give that a shot...

I'm not sure if it's illegal (I think what they can nab you for is uploading files), but I don't think anyone would hold it against you.

Since you have the hard copy I wouldn't really worry about it.

I'll search around then, ill report back once ive tried it with the alternate version i dont have.

The thing is... you bought a particular version of the game. I can imagine it not being morally wrong to download the same version (when your physical media is damaged). However here you want to download a different pack, which is not what you paid for.

And the pack you own does work for other people (me included). Hence it's either:
- damaged media (and you could possibly download it)
- something wrong with your system installation / configuration

I think this problem needs an answer, and there doesnt seem to be one for others like me.

It worked when I used the alternate version of the game.

Thanks for everyones input!
