State Officer Frees Bald Eagle with Single Bullet

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- A bald eagle owes its life to the sharpshooting skills of an Iowa conservation officer.

The bird has yet to offer any thanks, but Jason Sandholdt is getting plenty of recognition from those who saw him use a single bullet last weekend to free the bird. The eagle was stuck hanging from a branch that hung over a cliff at Lake Red Rock southeast of Des Moines.

Sandholdt, who works for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, responded with state colleagues after the eagle was found hanging about 60 feet above the lake.

With binoculars, they could see that the bird had caught a single talon in a knothole in the branch when it landed. Apparently, the bird tried to take off, losing its balance. It hung from the talon, upside down.

Many in the group thought a mercy killing was the best option, but Sandholdt asked for one chance with his rifle.

The officer took aim, and his shot went cleanly through the edge of the knothole. The eagle flew away and disappeared over the horizon.

Lucky shot of the year. My dad hit a bird with a rock once from about 100 feet away. He said, "Watch me hit that bird," and he threw a rock and completely missed the bird. But nature couldn't have it that way, so the bird flew up into the rock, and fell to the ground.

Lol, reminds me of when I was a kid and threw a tennis ball at my friend from what had to be 150 feet away, aiming for his head (because I knew I couldn't hit the wide side of a barn, much less a target that small from 150'). He had a headache all day and was pretty pissed at me 🙁

I used to go shooting all the time with an air rifle in my back yard seeing how zero'd in I could get the scope at a certain range. One could only hope that such an activity could lead to a feat as noble as the OP.

I think every kid where I was growing up has a similar story that involves a BB gun.

haha as a kid I wanted to see how high I could throw a pine cone, so I launched it underhand as hard as I could, watched it peak, and then come crashing down on my brothers head 10 feet away. He cried but I couldn't help but laugh.
