lol You picked the only two good short ones in how long? A decade? Longer?
Seriously, though - if he has the mind and character of those two its a great pick.
Well, that's a bad assumption of the data set. The problem is that there are actually very few diminutive QBs that ever really got a shot because of the "too short to be any good" stigma. So a nicely comparable N between the two populations was never able to be established and if anything, the success of Brees and Wilson should be more of a signal that some of these days do deserve a shot, and probably more of them did in the past. Obviously, the game is a bit different now, but there is nothing in the current game where smaller QBs could have actually had success in the 80s and forward with more pass-heavy, dink-and-dunk type offenses really taking hold, rather than only recently.
Honestly, (and this would certainly be affected by the skewed data set) but how many giant, perfect QBs flamed out for various reasons unrelated to size, compared to the short ones that were given a shot? Maybe it really isn't size? Charlie Ward won the Heisman at FSU but didn't even consider joining the NFL because of the size stigma. Granted, it's great that the guy was a phenomenal talent, so was able to be successful in the NBA, but that's long been a factor going in.
I don't know much about Mayfield because I don't broadly follow NCAA football, but I thought I read earlier that he has maturity/discipline problems? Whatever that means. ....I would think that if he really does have the tools, personality should be the bigger hangup with a guy like that, right? I mean....Ryan Leaf!
