Dunno if anybody else has done this before, but I just discovered the easiest way to remove the thermal pad that comes on heatsinks: cook it. 🙂 I was wary of using direct flame like a torch or the gas stove, but I popped it into the electric toaster oven, turned it to TOAST and let it get nice and hot. Wiped off a good portion of the stuff, stuck it back in to heat back up (cools off quickly, as it's designed to) and cleaned it all off. Worked much better than alchohol or acetone does.
