So my wife and I have been considering a new vehicle and I've been spending the last couple weeks checking out what I can when I have the time. The local Kia dealership runs an add on TV about their Kia Fortes and how you can get 0% APR at 60 months AND $2,000 in rebates. I figure that it's worth a look, but when I get there they inform me that apparently there was an "error" in the ad department and that 0% is only for 36 months and it's UP TO $2000 in rebates (you have to qualify for military, competitve bonus... but this part isn't that big of a deal).

It's been 5 days and they still have 0% for 60 months stickers all over the place and on the windows and haven't changed anything... hell, their TV commercial is still declaring it. Yesterday I stopped by just to take a look at their Optimas and of course they have $4000 in rebates tags on pretty much every Optima but when you ask them about it, they correct it and mention it's only $2500 plus $500 military. I think I'm going to avoid this dealership from now on.

/lame rant

Maybe I'm wrong, but that sounds like something to contact the state's attorney general about.

I've considered it... I drive by the dealership a couple times a week. I think I might take a look at their ads in a couple of days and if it's still not changed, I might just have to mention something...

It really depends on what state you are in. Some states believe in limited government, and the "free market"
Lying in advertising, according to their philosphy, is none of the governments business. The free market will correct itself.

geez, I made myself lol when I typed that.

Could be $10000 rebates with negative interest rates, you are still making a mistake if you buy a Kia.

Tell them you want the deal you saw on the ad and see pasted all over the cars in the lot. Tell them you will buy a car from them if they give you that deal, if not you will take your business elsewhere. They want to sell you a car, but you gotta play their stupid game a little to get what you want.

Report this to your local newspaper. If the government agencies won't do something, hit them with negative press.

Please provide a list of states in which it is legal to do what the OP is describing.

*sigh*

Sometimes I wonder why people even bother posting. I'd rather have a Kia over just about any of the Big 3's cars.
My parents bought a brand new Kia this summer and it has been in the shop 8 times because it wouldn't start/died on the highway. I wouldn't take one if you gave it to me (which is possible because here they do 2 for 1 specials every year).

It may be false advertising, but it is not "bait and switch"

"In retail sales, a bait and switch is a form of fraud in which the party putting forth the fraud lures in customers by advertising a product or service at an unprofitably low price, then reveals to potential customers that the advertised good is not available but that a substitute is. This use of this term has extended to similar situations outside of the marketing sense"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bait_and_switch

The legal remedy is to sue for false advertising, but it IS Bait & Switch.

They're not revealing a substitute product, they're offering the same product but with less appealing terms. That's not bait and switch, there's no "switch". Not that it matters, it's a minor technicality, but I'm a pedant.

If you're paying off a car for 5 years, you need to consider buying a car you can afford.

This is true. I took out a three year loan with a payment well within my budget and it's still irritating to pay that note every month. I couldn't even imagine how I'd be stressing if I was upside down and had 4 more years of payments.

this is one of the dumbest things i've ever read on here.

just because you are choosing to pay for a car for 5 years doesn't mean you can't afford it.

i am paying off $19k in student loans ... guess I shouldn't have gone to college since I couldn't afford it ...

I thought all dealers did that? They run teaser ads to get you onto the lot but when you start asking more "oh, not that's for this certain model and of course we don't have any of those". Just standard stealership practices.
