The Fleecing of America Continues...

http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story?id=6782719&page=1

Despite a near collapse that required $45 billion in federal taxpayer bailout funds, Bank of America sponsored a five day carnival-like affair just outside the Super Bowl stadium this past week as President Obama decried wasteful spending on Wall St.

Brian Ross investigates the bankers who sponsored Super Bowl festivities. The event ? known as the NFL Experience ? was 850,000 square feet of sports games and interactive entertainment attractions for football fans and was blanketed in Bank of America logos and marketing calls to sign up for football-themed banking products.

The bank staunchly defended its sponsorship, saying it was a "business proposition" and part of its "growth strategy."

Critics blasted the spending as a serious abuse of taxpayer money.

Leading Congressional critic, Congressman Elijah Cummings, (D-MD), said, "They should know better, but obviously they don't."

According to the Bank of America, the official bank of the NFL, its NFL partnerships and product tie-tins "generate significant revenue streams." The bank said it was legally required to fulfill its contract to be an NFL sponsor and that its NFL product sales had already increased since the Experience began Jan. 24.

The bank refused to tell ABC News how much it is spending as an NFL corporate sponsor, but insiders have put the figure at close to $10 million. The NFL Experience was on top of that and was inked last summer, according to the bank.

The NFL said it was a "multi-million dollar" event and that it was also spending money to put on the event. A Super Bowl insider said the tents alone cost over $800,000.

Tickets were available for purchase for between $12.50 and $18.50, with proceeds from ticket sales going to local youth initiatives. It was the 18th year for the "interactive fan festival" and the first that Bank of America has sponsored it.

Schatz said that deal or no deal, the event sponsorship should have been abdicated once the bank took billions in bailout funds.

"The Super Bowl is a big deal, but it's a bigger deal that Bank of America is being bailed out by the America taxpayers," Schatz said. "This is an exceptional year and it's a time to say we're not going to do business as usual. We're going to say no, we're going to show some restraint, and we're going to cut back on something that really isn't absolutely necessary."

GM, another NFL corporate sponsor and bailout recipient, said it scaled back this year and didn't send any executives to the big game or schedule dealer meetings around it.

A GM spokesperson said that while the company was still providing a fleet of courtesy vehicles to the NFL for VIPs, only 200 were sent this year, down from 400 in 2008.

Another Bailed Out Wall St. Firm Gathers in Palm Beach

Earlier last week, Morgan Stanley, the bank that laid off 5,000 employees last year and took $10 billion in taxpayer bailout money, held a three-day conference for clients at the Breakers, a five-star oceanfront resort in Palm Beach, FL.

Morgan Stanley would not say what the elegant gathering cost, but said it is an annual tradition and that its clients paid their own travel costs and got a discounted room rate of $400 a night.

Congressman Cummings said that doesn't justify hosting such a lavish event when people on Main St. are struggling to make ends meet.

"For most people on my block, that would be half of a mortgage payment, a monthly mortgage payment," he said.

Howe the hell can these banks justify feeding at the corporate trough, then spending $10 million to sponsor the SuperBowl?

Don't they fucking get it?

It's MY money and I want it NOW!

The fleecing of America continues...at a record pace.

Isn't it just great, I watched the video earlier today. Just amazes me what big business gets away with.

Not just big business, but big government too. Obama had a special dinner party for who knows how many people and guess what they served, Wagyu beef flown in from Japan at over a hundred dollars a pound. So much for accountability in the White house.....

You tell me. Obama handing money to poor deadbeats who spend it is a stimulus, while Bush handing money to rich deadbeats is apparently a crime.

I guess we should have them stop advertising too. Because, you know, not marketing is the best way to attact customers.

No wonder why we are fucked right now. Americans will do anything possible to be as short sighted as possible. It's fucking pathetic and only aids in the bubblehead mentality.

Events like this builds up the base and helps the company. Are you in marketing, or even business?

Shh, I'm sure dahunan's resume would put us all to shame with his vast business experience. He's got that lemonade stand from junior high, and he sold dimebags at a Phish concert which he parlayed into a sweet set of rims for his civic!

While this does sound a bit extravagant to be sure, corporations (including banks) cannot just totally stop all forms of advertising and promotion just because the economy is in the crapper. In the end what matters is the outcome. Did the company make a profit from the incurred expense or ensure long term new customers? Did it help to build business and increase brand awareness in a favorable way? I got news for you, people. You can't run a corporation without spending some money on promotion and advertising. Your competitors will if you won't. Sometimes you gotta spend money to make money.

And why do you think you know so well who BofA is? Because of promotions and advertising, Einstein! If BofA wasn't doing anything to help preserve their image right now we'd be hearing nothing but bad news about them and they'd fade into oblivion. Bad press is everywhere in the financial industry now. The banks are damned if they do and damned if they don't and being scrutinized for every move they make. As with anything, some people will think they are doing the right thing and some people will think they are doing the wrong thing. But ultimately you cannot stop promoting your corporation and expect it to thrive or recover.

Do you know WHY advertising in the Super Bowl costs so much? Because your ads reach HUGE numbers of people as the Super Bowl is one of the most watched events in the world. Last time I checked, advertising wasn't effective if nobody sees the ads. So what should they do? Spend $100 to put little crappy pisant ads on community public broadcast channels and do shitty late night infomercials? You want to reach a broadly diverse and large audience of people with your ads I'm sorry but it's gonna cost you. Corporations are willing to spend such large amounts of money to advertise during the Super Bowl because it is cost-efficient when you take into account how many sets of eyes and ears receive your message. But yes, the VIP executive suites are a little overboard to be sure.

They had a valid contract in force. Breaking it probably would have cost them much more than simply carrying through with their obligation not to mention the loss of valuable marketing exposure which we would have then raked them over the coals for because they wasted money.

Tickets were available for purchase for between $12.50 and $18.50, with proceeds from ticket sales going to local youth initiatives.

omg.....those fucking baby eating wall street monsters!!!
they sponsored an event that gave away it's proceeds!!

I'm in agreement that companies do have to advertise, even ones that got bailout money. And I'm also glad you're in agreement that BoA's case was excessive. /thread.

This is the exact reason we should not be bailing out any company. Once we give them our money we feel that we have a right to tell them how to run their company, and that will never work. Either nationalize the companies (please don't!) or GTFO and let them live and die by their choices.

And let the entire economy die within a month.

How about we be rational, keep the economy going, let it wind down in an orderly manner, and shut the fuck up about short-term solutions?

Short-term "I want this, I want that" irrational behavior got us into this situation. It'll take long-term planning to get us out. Too bad too many Americans have ADD/HD.

how many car ads do you see in a day? how much money do those ads cost to run nation wide on every single station? and the car makers want a bail out....
