Bail question

when you post bail for someone, do you get the money back?

The way I understand it bail is like insurance. You're betting your money that they won't take off. The greater the risk of flight, the higher the bail. If they don't leave, you get your cash back.

Usualy, if you post all the bail and the defendant shows up in court for ALL the court dates until the case is resolved, you get it back. If you go to a bail bondsman and post part of the bail , the bondsman keeps it. In Federal court you can post part of it and pledge some property you will get it all back. Sometimes when you post all the bail and are convicted the Judge may fine you the amount of the bail and keep it( This happened to me when I posted bond for a friend). But there are lots of other set ups.

You get it back if the person shows up for court, and the person is found innocent. They'll keep the money to pay towards any fines (at least in my friend's case).

Well, for me, it's true. The dummy tried picking a fight in a bar, got thrown out, then started hollaring at a cop. Cop got annoyed and hauled his ass off to jail. $2000 and a few phone calls later, and he was out. I sat at my apartment making phone calls for him, while my roommates got the money and waited at the jail for him. Kinda sucked calling his friends "uhh, you don't know me, I'm one of Brad's friends..." at 4am. They thought he had died er something. One guy was relieved when he found out Brad was just in jail. The other guy I called was a lawyer friend who was drunk off his ass and partying when I finally got in touch w/ him at 5am.
