Bahamas

It is Winter. I'm bored. I hate the cold, and I want to go do something before Christmas. I'm seeing the Bahamas flight wise as fairly cheap on Delta. Is Nassau worth a damn? 5 days too much? Give me your experiences. Thanks!

Cable Beach Radisson in Nassau

Nice hotel, nice area...

I forget room rates but all inclusive is only $100 more a day. That includes all the alcohol you can drink, all the food you can eat.

Edit: 5 days is nice but a week is better IMHO.

It's a ****** place outside of Paradise Island, for the most part. Very poor, very iffy. Just stay on the beach and no worries, other than the ladies walking up and down offering to braid your hair.

And guys asking you to go on Booze Cruizes, Parasailing and Jetski Rides. 🙂

the only experience I have with Bahamas is Grand Bahamas. We stayed in Wyndham Club Fortuna all inclusive resort. We had an awesome time there. All the drinks you want and all the food you want. Food was the best part....delicious. Staff were extremely nice and helpful. Although I hear some of the other smaller bahamian islands offer more pristine beaches, the beaches around club fortuna were some of the best Ive seen (compared to Cancun, Miami, Key Biscayne, Daytona, Ft. Lauderdale, and New Jersey).

we went the week after memorial day and it was fairly empty...which is exactly how I like it. Walked along the beach for about a mile away from club fortuna and found us to be the only people in eyesight...which gave my gf a chance to sunbathe topless 😉

btw...here are some pics from our trip...
Bahamas trip

oh yea...there isnt much to do outside of the resort. No clubs or anything...

I remember you guys saying that before I went on my cruise. I hit Nassau, St. Maarten, & St. Thomas also and I would put all 3 islands under the same category... nice on the beach, nowhere else. And St. Maarten/St. Thomas wasn't as shady, but it really had nothing more to offer either.

What do you mean? We took as private tour on Nassau and the locations we were taken by were worse than any US city I have been in, and I've been to gary, IN. 😛

St. Maarten doesn't really offer much other than beaches, but it's not unsafe, from what I saw and felt. We walked up and down the main drag and then back to the ship without feeling weird.

St. Thomas was the most touristy of the bunch, but the tour we took was relaly neat. Lots of pirate history there.

Hmm, perhaps I should reconsider. I didn't realize it was t hat *bad* outside of the beaches. I mean Cancun isn't really like that...haven't you been to Cancun as well iamwiz82?

Bahamas is great as long as you stay on the resort. Most of the country is povery ridden and dangerous, except for Lyford Cay.

we were GOING to go to cancun last month, but spirit airlines cancelled our flight three days before we were set to leave.
From allll the research i had done about cancun, i think the bahamas are a bit worse.

I have heard that cancun nightlife is pretty good (lots of bars, restaurant open, etc) but Nassau really did not have much of that at all.
Durring the day we felt unceratin walking anywhere but the main street in town.

My whole thing is if you are just wanting to get away for a few days to beat this horrible weather, go to Nassau/paradise Island and stay just at the hotel or resort, chill on the beach and drink.

If you really feel you want to explore, i would say go to the British Virgin Islands or even the USVI instead.

But, Wiz is right.... Both times we went it was worse than i could ever explain. I do not mean to exaggerate, but i really felt VERY unsafe anywhere we went.

The areas we went through were so poor that they were collecting rainwater on the roofs of their "houses." Really they were metal shacks.

We aren't the only ones to feel this way

cancun is good if you're looking to party, hook up, get laid.

bahamas is good if you just wanna relax

bahamian beaches >>>>> cancun beaches
cancun nightlife >>>>> bahamian nightlife

been to both and they are different.

bahamas ---
stayed at Atlantis, was pure relaxation and was very safe.
went swimming with dolphins ans the like.

cancus-----
fiesta americana grand coral 10 str resort
more party than anything else.

If you look around you will be able to find some incredible deals in the last half of January. Very little travel during that time.

As far as where to go and where to stay = depends on how much you wanna spend. I don't know if that area got hit really hard with hurricanes or not.

Yeah, I've found a lot of good deals in Jan, but then school is back in session, and I can't miss class.

I guess I'm just going to go to the Capital One Bowl in Orlando. My brother lives there, so I can use his house while he's in Miami for the Orange.

I was really hoping to snag a great last minute deal before Christmas, and there are some out there, but the dates are just to screwy to work with. Oh well, maybe next year or I can go somewhere during Spring Break.

Thanks to all who helped, I don't think I'll be going to Nassau anytime soon. I want to wait and see how the Caymans are going to turn out after all the storms, and I might go there.

I went to Freeport a few years ago on a Scuba trip. Not much of a place really, but the water was absolutely gorgeous. Stay somewhere like Atlantis or one of the larger resorts and it'll be better amenity wise. Also, not sure about temperature this time of year, but if water is warm go snorkeling or even scuba. Was crystal clear in the springtime when I was there. Visibility was like 75-feet!!!

Never been but being in Florida i know people that go all the time. There must be soemthing there to do for 5 days.

i'm guessing the hotels all have airport shuttles, and enough security to keep the riff raff out? tickets via jetblue are dirt cheap!
