i have no issues with smokers, i used to smoke, blah blah

but today our department manager called a meeting.

agenda: hours of work & breaks

she is going to be "giving notice" of work start-times and breaks, etc... and a kind reminder to everyone to please adhere to the schedule (two of us were ~3 mins late today, yadda yadda)

i just find it ironic that the manager in question goes out for 15-min smoke breaks every hour on the hour.

edit: less irony per Syringer.

i don't want to be that guy. i just like to share my little quips with you folks because i know there are office cubies like me out there in AT land.

edit: & if you're saying that because you think it's the right thing to do then you don't enjoy flying under the radar like i do. it would also be a shame if i couldn't post a little anecdote without someone giving me advice but this is that forum so whatever

Keep written documentation of when she goes down ... if she brings it up again, show the proof. But if she's salary, watch it, she could be burning the oil at home!

We all know how managers like to say that ...

I transferred out from under a guy like that. He'd jump down your throat both feet for surfing the web ('wasting company time!!') but would be outside on smoke breaks for literally 2+ hours of the day.

Yes, much ironing.

This is not ironing, ironing is when the manager practices what he preaches.

whats the irony? Thats life. Managers get paid more to do less work and take more breaks while cracking the whip on poor souls like you and me.

well, there is truth in that.

i also never considered the salary angle, which i am sure she uses to justify her smoke breaks, somehow.

Ok then, remove manager and replace it with someone you outrank. They still spend those 15 mintes out there smoking. We have one dude here on our team that smokes out of about 10 of us. I'd say he spends about an hour a day out there. I wish I had an hour out of my day that I could do nothing important, still get paid for it, and still go home the same time as non-smokers.

sometimes its the reverse. i work with mainly nonsmokers, and they take a 15 min break morning and afternoon, with a 30 min lunch. i take a 6 min break every hour and a half and no lunches longer than 8 or so minutes. ive timed the other guys (since they always bitch like you guys are doing now) and right before their break, they stop by the microwave and put a snack in. then they go to the bathroom, put their stuff away and get their stuff out of the microwave. after they are back in their area, they start their 15 minute break. lunch is the same way. after counting it up and averaging it over 3 weeks, they were taking 45 min more a day than they were allowed (supposed) to take. our office manager so wants to be that time keeper and keep the smokers from "wasting time", but the owner brought it up in a company meeting once when everyone was bitching about it. he said "dont look at other peoples habits, watch your own. as long as their work is satisfactory to me, they can sit out there and smoke all day long". it took about 3 months, but the bitching finally stopped. their longer breaks, however, still happen. damn nonsmokers, wasting company time.

But neither is the thread.

That in itself then, is irony.
I fixed the thread title & summary for you. Are you intellectually stimulated?
