BAH... Poor gaming performance in XP

Ever since i went to XP a few weeks back ive been bothered by sub-par gaming performance... Performance issues i never had with Win98/ME (this is however, the only major gripe i have with XP).

I know the story, 98 is supposed to be better for gaming, but this just sucks. In GTA3 textures on the road load slow, in FPS games the screen stutters when i made quick turns. I've got a slow cpu @ 700mhz, but this type decrease in performance is crazy. Everything is set as it should be, and ive got fully updated drivers for everything...

Is my main problem here the cpu? Does XP require more CPU power just to run games (As opposed to Win98/ME)? Does the fact that all the games im having problems playing (GTA3, Quake2/3, etc) are being run from the HD have anything to do with it?

Eh, any suggestions would be helpful..

Other items of importance:
ASUS v8440 Geforce 4Ti 4400
512mb DDR-333 2700
AMD Duron 700mhz
Windows XP Pro

Win9X/ME does not have better gaming peformance. Your PC is fairly slow, and Win98 probably worked better on it than XP. (700mhz Duron) Also, your CPU runs @ 100mhz FSB, and your memory is probably only running PC1600. Even if your memory is running 333mhz asynch, the performance will suck because the FSB is the bottleneck.

So you're saying the entire operating systems peformance may be affected now by the slow cpu? I ran a timedemo in q2 and got 85fps... Which is decent, but i get stuttering on the screen occasionally from quick movement of the mouse, turning left to right, etc. I'm using a Logitech optical mouse, so i installed new drivers and set it to it's maximum sample rate, but the problems remained.

I think you are a tad slow on the cpu side there. Are you using ntfs or fat32?
fat32

OK, so i've pretty much decided to upgrade the cpu now, most likely getting a Barton 3000+ to sync with the 333mhz RAM.

But is there an outside chance something else could be affecting my gaming? Is there anything notorious about XP and games that i might not know about (aside from the locked refresh rate issue, which ive fixed)?
