Bah, do I need a domain for just web hosting for FTP access?

i'm trying to get a dixiesys host, just for FTP use only for hosting files / pictures. Do I need to register a domain name? (it won't let me continue registering without domain)

Probably, since for $2/month or whatever they charge, I'm pretty sure they use virtual hosting, and then yes, you need a domain.

Do you mean "hosting pics" as in the BBZZDD/Adul/Paulson type? I.E. able to handle the AT Effect? If so, then yeah, you need to be professionally hosted on a real connection.

But for basic FTP access, you just need (um, see my sig) a broadband connection at home and a Freeware FTP program.

My server is down until tomorrow (swapping out cases) but I have a basic fileserver/FTP on my cable connection. Most folks get a 35kb/s download from me, which ain't bad.

some web hosts don't require you to buy a domain, they just give you an ip address, no domain needed

i just switched a site to a place that does it this way

yes you do
