Bah death of one of my seti machines

Well it appears all sorts fo things happened while I was on vacation. The team closed on 3 million WU, Just checked the website and it shows 2.9 something. Seems that my machines called in a vacation too. I got home to find none of machines crunching at all. Seems one rebooted while I was gone and I forgot to put Seti in the start up, bah. The other just seemed to quit. Not sure what that was all about . But my other machine seems to be DOA. Won't post, won't beep, just spins up the CD and nothing. Guess back to the drawing board for that one. The bummer is that was my fastest machine with WU times of just under 4 hours. Anyone got any ideas on the no posting thing? PSU seems to be working. Looks like the drives maybe spinning up. Figure it maybe be MB or CPU. Anywho haven't looked at it too much but I figure I better get it back up and running since I broke into the top 1000 I got to give the high rollers a run for their money 🙂 Anyway here are the stats.

K7S5A latest bios
XP2200+ with Volcano 7 running at 1800mhz
512mb RAM
Enermax PSU
GF4 4600 🙂

thanks,

Also turn off the power and unplug the machine from the wall outlet. Open the case up and unplug the power supply from the motherboard then plug it back in. Plug the machine back in and see if it boots. Sometimes removing power from the motherboard resets everything 🙂

I am working on a system that did the same thing as you experenced.

One day it works, the next, no post, no beeps. Unfortunately it is a Slot A mobo with a 900 athlon, and I do not have another mainboard or CPU to test it with. I tried removing everything from the case, removing all the cards except the video ( which I reseated ) and tried firing it up. No go. Tried a different PWS (400 watt ) tried different memory too. Only thing I can come up with is a dead mobo or a dead CPU. Both suck.

It is a system I built for a friend of mine, so it looks like he will be getting a new mainboard and CPU. Now I just have to figure out a way to save his data. I hate swapping a mainboard, it confuses the hell out of windows.

Do what Crazee said and if that doesn't work then remove PCI cards and see if it boots without them. I had a phone system get hit by lightning and it came into the computer through the network card. I thought the CPU was fried but I replaced the network card and everything is fine now.

I kinda figured it may be a dead mobo since I get no beeps. Aren't mobos supposed to beep if they detect a bad CPU? I know they do for memory and no vid card ect.. I could handle a dead mobo since this one is a tad older and that means I can upgrade 🙂. Just hope the vid card didn't fry, dang thing cost more than the CPU.

A moment of silence for a dead PC. 🙁

Do what Crazee said, although after unplugging I hit the On button to drain any capacitors. I've got some MBs that actually store enough power to start the fans and light up for a second. That makes sure it is really drained.

Also try clearing the CMOS as suggested by Freewolf.

After that, it's a matter of troubleshooting. Remove everything except the essentials. Then try booting. If you have the spare parts, or another similar PC, start swapping out parts 1 at a time, test them on a second PC if possible. Power Supply, memory, CPU.

Best of luck.

Ain't THAT the dasm truth! :Q :|

Ok SpiffyGuy, first you will need at least a 16-ounce hammer, or 20-ounce if you can find one handy... 😀

Just kidding! 😉 But I'm thinking the first thing I'd try is a different power supply, followed by taking the whole darn thing apart, laying it out on the desk, putting in one stick of RAM and the video card (and CPU), threatening it a bit with the hammer, and try that. Then try different PSU, different RAM and different video card and you've got it narrowed down to the CPU, the board or both at once (possibly a death triangle of board/CPU/PSU). Good luck!

Death Triangle!:Q lol 🙂

Throw in new mbrd & cpu ,fire it up (cross fingers & hope it gets to windows😉) ,copy wanted data to another partition or HDD.Re-install if you still need/want to😉.If it doesn't get to windows pull out his HDD's & plug them into your rig & copy data to another partition or HDD.Good luck 🙂
Btw his mbrd wasn't an Abit KA7 was it?
Btw2 ,my fathers Slot A rig died earlier this year ,the KA7 snuffed it ,but I tested the CPU (using a borrowed rig from a local OverclockersUK forum member) & it was fine ,I sold it & its at a new home now🙂

Has anyone noticed that when Windows does get confused its nearly always the 2nd IDE channel that you can't get working again!?

TELL me about it. :| My home PC doesn't recognize the 2nd controller. Well, it recognizes it, but dasm if you can get anything to work on it. CD, nope. HD, nope. Fortunately, the MB has an additional PROMISE IDE controller for setting up IDE RAID, and I can get the CD-ROM to work on that one. But everyonce in awhile the PC locks up when inserting a CD. :|

Hasn't been an a big issue, but I recently acquired a CD-RW, and I am not sure I'm going to be able to get it to work easily. 🙁
