Got my fiancee a new computer for Christmas. Well, I got her parts and put it together. Anyway, I am trying to install all the windows service packs and hotfixes and the drivers for her printer and all that stuff. For some reason it keeps rebooting in the middle of installing various updates which sometimes leaves the system in a non-operable state! This is frustrating and I just needed to write something to occupy some time while I download the whole service pack 4 local install thingy. (Actually for some reason it's called the "Network install")

It takes only a few mins for an unprotected windows box to become infected. Faster than you can update.

Wrong forum.

Maybe, the memory timings are too agressive. Set the BIOS to some conservative settings before proceeding with the installation of the software.

I found this out personally. Fresh install of XP with no service packs or hotfixes. Started downloading drivers, RPC exploited. Damn. Okay, go get that hotfix right away. Reboot, head over to MS website, find hotfix, RPC'd again. I had enough time to bookmark the page to the download. Reboot, head over, RPC'd again in the middle of the download. Reboot, resume download, RPC'd again before I could finish installing. Unplug network cable, reboot, install fix. Set up rest of system, system works great for 2 days, then slowly stuff stops working to the point where I was getting random reboots. Re-downloaded sp1a and the RPC hotfix, saved them to a cd, started over with no network and installed the fixes right away.

Yea... I dont have XP. Eh.

I dont think the PS is the problem. It doesnt reboot except when installing system stuff. If I just sit here and use it, nothing bad happens.

I am running macafee and adaware now to see what happens.

there are 6 service packs for win2k.

sounds like the same issues I had with win2k; one of the reasons I upgraded to XP.

I would upgrade her to winXP. Less hassle and you really only need service pack 1 with that.

PS: what are the system specs?

Never had that problem. I've installed WinXP thrice, on various machines, over the last 2 weeks. Didn't have ANY problems updating before being infected. Linksys firewall might have stopped it though.

Uhh, there are 6 service packs for NT4.0.

There are 4 for Windows 2000.

I didnt find any viruses or spyware with the latest macafee and adaware. So, I guess my firewall was effective. And I managed to install all of the updates and stuff without it spontaneously rebooting on me. I did however find that the cd drive that I installed windows off of is flaky. Maybe that had something to do with it.
