Baffling temperature readings

I just upgraded to a Intel E6750 and an Asus P5K Deluxe motherboard. I removed the old motherboard setup and took my Thermalright SI-120 off. I reinstalled that on the new chip and replaced the motherboard. I'm using a Nexus 120 silent fan on the SI-120. After some fights to get it to recognize my SATA drives I was able to boot.

With my old P4 overclocked to 3.96 on this setup I would idle at around 40-45 degrees. My mobo temperature was usually around 30 degrees. When I booted up the new E6750, my Asus probe showed me running at (I kid you not) 8 degrees. The motherboard was running at 24 degrees which is about room temperature. Now I'm not about to believe that my thermal paste applying skills are so great that I can get my temperatures down this low.

I thought perhaps it was the Asus probe, so I updated that, but no, the temperature remains sub 10C. Perhaps the motherboard had an issue, so I flashed the BIOS to the most recent version. Nope, nothing. I downloaded TAT. Samer readings. I downloaded Speedfan. Same readings. I crank up Orthos on both cores and I'm able to get the temperature to go up to 21C on the Asus probe and 28C on TAT. . .

I don't know what to make of all this. The probes, if I'm not mistaken, are in the CPU itself. I just can't trust that these temps are right. And if I want to overclock my system, I can't do that unless I know what my real temperatures are.

Has anyone ever seen or heard of anything like this?

Daverino,

I have exactly the same temps with my ASUS P5K-E with an E6850 on it - CPU at 8C, mobo about 28C. I reported it that way and got some big guffaws, so ran not only Probe II but also Intel's TAT, Core Temps, and Speed Fan, and got close to the same with all of them. Haven't tried Orthos yet and will be on vacation for a few more days before I can do that. Someone suggested it was my BIOS, but you've already de-bunked that... Maybe it is a bad probe on the CPU or the P5 motherboards. I'm tempted to buy a digital thermometer, but they are expensive.

If you get any different answers, I'll be waiting to hear also...

You should have a current temp/voltage/fan speed report within the BIOS setup pages. Go see what that is reporting.

Zepper and Daverino,

I should have mentioned that I went into the BIOS and checked the CPU temps - they were bouncing between 11C and 13C, which to me is still way low.

BTW, I'm using a Tuniq Tower cooler ojn the CPU and have an 80mm fan mounted outside of the side window (no room inside) and pointed directly at the top of the Tuniq. The Tuniq's fan is nrunning its lowest speed. Apparently enpough cooling, eh :)

I found that coretemp is giving me accurate readings. Apparently there's been a relatively recent change in the temp probe in the chip that's causing the issue. The Asus forums are a mess: slow and impossible to navigate. Poking around on Tom's Hardware I found that speedfan needs to be calibrated to work correctly with the newer chips as well. Running core temp gives me an idle temp of 25C (one degree over ambient) and load with Orthos at 43C, which I think is about right for a SI-120. It appears it's time to ditch Asus Probe. . .

Daverino,

I just contacted Intel Tech Support and after 30 minutes on the phone with them, they claim there are no issues with temp probes and they recommended I contact the mobo manufacturer. So they were no help. I asked if a digital thermometer would give me an accurate temp and he said, "Not really." That from India...

The search for truth marches on :)
