Badlands, South Dakota

Going on a 3 day camping trip to the Badlands National Park in South Dakota. I've never been there but have heard it is increidbly beautiful. Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday night we will be camping. I have read because of grassland fire issues they do not allow campfires. I have also seen from their website that the camping situation is first come first serve.

Is there anything up there that you would say that I MUST do?
Has anyone ever gone? If so, what was your favorite part?
Can you tell me anything specific about the park that would be helpful?

The plan so far is to go to Hot Springs, Mt. Rushmore, and the Wind Caves.

I was there just for the day, I stayed in Wall at a hotel since I was moving (tent was packed so damn deep).

The Badlands were some of the most beautiful sights I have seen in this country. I will for sure return someday and hopefully camp out there. I wish I could have spent more time there. I drove around, hiked some trails, and took about a zillion pictures. The weather was awesome when I was there and the sunset pictures I got are priceless to me.

"Badlands" encompases quite an area. Are you talking about Badlands Nat'l Park, or in some "undeveloped" part of the state?

It's been 40 years since I spent any time in that area, but there ARE some very beautiful parts of the park.

I visited The Badlands a couple of summers ago. I actually stayed at a motel that was about 45 minutes away for around $40/night. There is one road that goes thru the whole park. There are tons of stopping/hiking points. Great place.

It is badlands national park. changed the original post to note that.

Stay out of the southern part of the park that's on the rez.

If it get's to raining do not attempt to do any hiking. Stick to the pavement. The badlands do look their best after a rain though. It really brings out the colors.

If you climb anything, be careful not to put you hands onto anything above your eye level to pull yourself up. There are rattlesnakes.

I've spent a lot of time in the area, and my mom's from Wall.
