badass: vmware player

sweetness

What is VMware Player?

VMware Player is free software that enables PC users to easily run any virtual machine on a Windows or Linux PC. VMware Player runs virtual machines created by VMware Workstation, GSX Server or ESX Server and also supports Microsoft virtual machines and Symantec LiveState Recovery disk formats.

explain to me why I want to run a virtual machine?

I use it for testing, rather then have a bunch of boxes around, I can load up vm and have access to many platforms on one machine.

Thank you VMWare. I use the VMWare Workstation to consolidate all the lightly use servers at work. Nice stuff.

I think it just runs pre-created virtual machines from the workstation software, anyone confirm this?

Yes, you will need a pre-created vm first.

i love vmware.

at the software company i work for we use them for testing. most of our development peopl euse it too especially vmware 5 with the multiple snapshot trees.

its especially useful with ms visual studio as visual studio has the remote debugging over IP and you can use the virtual network on vmware to do that. you dont want to hose your production machines, and you dont want to have to be ghosting over test boxes and wasting time, and for that vmware is great.

i use vmware all the time for testing configurations -- and also for experimenting with freeware, to see 1) if it's usefull, 2) if it's loaded with spyware or virii
I also fire it up when I web-browse for something like a no-cd crack where i may come across seedy sites.

I'm downloading the vmware player now -- and i also see that they offer this:
quote:
Browser Appliance Virtual Machine Center

Virtual Machine
The Browser Appliance enables you to safely browse the Internet from within a VMware virtual machine -- protecting your host PC from spyware and malware.
/quote

That'll be sweet so I can legally run the player on any of my machines -- besides the one i have vmware workstation installed on.

Plus there's some other virtual machines they are offering for things like mysql pre-installed on suse, which i know I could use.... (although it says 'trial version' -- so it may not be what i need)

PS - the vmware player description indicates it works with microsofts virtual PC's, too, and symantecs livestate recovery images.
