Badass Ants

Ants are awesome! They talked about Bulldog Ants (type of Jack Jumper ant) which are my personal fav. They can lift rocks that would be the human equivalent of lifting a car. They are just plain nasty! One sting from these guys has been known to kill humans and they are very aggressive, as they often fight others of their own colony.

Driver ants (type of Army ants) are probably the most impressive. Up to 20 million strong, these ants are blind and work together using different chemicals to communicate. They travel along a set path with the guards along the sides protecting the weaker ants in the middle carrying food/larva. If they come across a gap they cant go around, they will use themselves to build a bridge. When they find a site for their nest they just build it out of themselves!

I saw them take down a full size crab and they have been known to kill humans and large livestock. They swarm all over their prey. The large guard ants cut into soft spots while the smaller ones go for the even softer tissue inside. They said the most common way people die from the ants is the ants get in your lungs and you suffocate. Sounds like a party! Count me in!

What a way to die 🙁 It gives me shivers thinking about getting ripped into then having the smaller ants get inside for more munching.

It's usually infants that will fall victim to the ants. It's incredibly unusual for it to happen to an adult. Though if you were say passed out drunk, you'd probably be screwed.

Australia really does seem to have evolved an amazing venomous arms race - that place is just overrun by amazingly lethal critters.

I still think the bullet ant is the most impressive insect. They're the biggest ants, at an inch long, and their venom is rated as the most painful insect venom to humans.

I seem to recall seeing something on the Discovery Channel about an African ant that was supposed to be the most lethal to humans, in that they are quite toxic and travel in enormous swarms, but I don't know what kind it was.

I caught parts of that. It was pretty interesting.

Yeah the Siafu are really aggressive. They'll kill just about anything that gets in their way. They look pretty crazy, with the big ones making like a barb wire fence as the tens of thousands of them move in a huge line. Thats definitely not a line I would wan't to cross.

I liked how the first type of ants, the army ones in the amazon were actually helpful to humans. When they started swarming that one building I figured the people were going to start freaking out, but they just got out of their way and watched them. The ants cleaned out all the other creatures (spiders, scorpions, etc.) in and around the building. Thats pretty cool.

great documentary, hope i can find it on dvd someday, or maybe someone digitized it...i've never seen any postings for such documentaries tho 🙁
