I just installed a new video card in my system it is an x1800xt 512 and i am getting artifacts in games flashing little squares of varying colors . i was told that a weak power supply can cause this . or it could be bad card that i should return . so i am here to try and find out of it is the card or the power supply before i have to shell out cash for returning the card.

i have an HEC 350w power supply the label says 15a on 12v
amd 64 3200+ Venice core
turtle beach sound
card fire wire card
built in lan

i know i probably should get a new power supply and i was going to get one before i got a new video card but i got such a sweet deal on the card i got it first . so what do you guys think bad card or is it the power supply ?

Unplug all cd-roms, take out the soundcard. This is not a full proof test but it allows more power to be used by the video card if the PSU is weak. I would say if it still continues it is a bad card.

15a on the 12 V rail isn't so great...I'd buy another PSU if you were going to anyway and if that doesn't cure it return(or exchange) the card.

I wouldn't rule out a bad card but 15a on the 12v line seems way way too low to me when running a power hungry card. The X1800 (and X1900 as well) has a recommended PSU rating of 450watt and 30a on a fully loaded system. In reality you shouldn't have a problem with lower amperage on your 12v line so long as you're not running like 4 HD's, dual optical drives, tons of case fans, etc. I still wouldn't recommend a good PSU without at least 25a on the 12v line. I'm not a big fan of dual rail (two 12v lines) PSU's but if you get one of those, try to get one with at least 18a on each rail.

The 350W PSU and 15a on the 12v rail is your problem.

Get this PSU:

Antec 550W TruePower II PSU.

HEY nlpro,,i own a x1800xt,and at full load it alone draws almost 226 watts of power. i have a 680 watt power supply, and crossfire to feed. i have to agree with most of the other posts here, you need to grab yourself a stiff power supply. at least 500-550 watts. that x1800xt is a HUGE POWER HOG!!! now imagine having to feed 2 of em(1 is a standard x1800xt,and the other x1800xt is a crossfire edition xt.) so i'm sayin flat out,you need a new supply. you will be grinning from ear to ear once you install a 550 watt supply😀. you'll notice right away, all of a sudden your system has woke up from dreamland.😎

good luck to ya nlpro!!
