She'll be 12 in a month, and this weekend she had her first visit from her soon to be monthly "friend" (her period for you guys that are not in the know).

And on a sader note, one of her close friends was killed in a car crash this morning.

I can't help her much with the 'period' talk, but she knows I'm there for her. I also had some close friends killed at a young age, so I can relate.

Wow, that really is a rough one-two punch there. Especially number two... Best of luck to you and your daughter.

I hope I never have a daughter.

At least your daughter gets her 'friend' at a normal age. It seems so common that girls are getting their periods at like 7-9 now.

It may seem strange, but most of us are adults and have to deal with these things in real life. It doesn't do a person much good to simply pretend that women doing get their periods. It is a major event in a young woman's life, and can be very tough to deal with. If I found out that I would bleed once a month for the rest of my life I would be pretty pissed.

On a side note, check with your doctor on how much Tylonol or Ibuprophen she can take at a time, and buy a big bottle. The cramping can be pretty painful as I understand.

Oh come on, lighten up.. It isn't that big of a deal. It is a big moment for their family.

That really sucks about the car accident, though. :( Man, I'm glad I've never had to go through anything like that, especially so young...

I don't find it disturbing, I think its just a fact of life, and he is being realistic about it. It's not like its something that anyone should worry about hiding.......

As for her, ouch, really bad weekend. As for the period talk, is there any women around that can talk to her about it? Girls get some scary thoughts in their head at times like those, and it would be a good idea for her to talk to someone.

I thought 11 was early... I've never heard of 7. Maybe 9 in extreme cases... dear lord...

I hope I never have a daughter either. I'll end up in jail for beating her boyfriends.

I'm guessing he is posting about this because he is disturbed by it himself... kind of upsetting for some, I suppose.

But LOL, if she knew you posted this, you would NOT be in her good graces!

Definitely not meant to be disturbing, it's a big moment in her life. I was just a little shocked at how early it happened. Sorry to offend anyone. It was the combonation of events that made it so dramatic for her.....

Sorry to hear about your daughter's friend... but the arrival of her menses should be a cause of celebration and preparation for adulthood, not sadness.

HAHA! When I was 12, I got an infection in my breast, a milk duct or something, its pretty common during puberty. My mom told EVERYONE, and they all made fun of me, holding their chests and such. I was soooo mad at her, I didn't talk to her for a week!!

I don't think Tylenol or Ibuprofen is what is recommended for cramps, is it? What's in Midol? :p

11 is not early anymore. :Q

My girlfriends step sister recently started- at 9.

If I'm not mistaken, it's due to all the estrogen and progesterone that they give cows. It makes them produce more milk, but the hormones also end up in the milk.

I'm not really sure if that's been proven to be the cause, or what, as I heard that a couple of years ago. Certainly seems plausible, though.

She was spending the night at her best friends house when it happened, so there was an adult female that she trusted there at the time.... Her mom has been very open and talks to her about it. She seems to be handling it very well actually.

Sorry again for bringing this up on a message board if it bothers anyone...

See?

Being a girl in puberty is bad enough as it is, but WORSE when your parents are broadcasting your every pimple! :D

Seriously, the poor dear sounds like she has had a very emotional time and deserves a treat.

Time to introduce her to Shopping Therapy, if she hasn't experienced it already. ;)

how is period coming a bad thing?...
welcome to womanhood!

u know in japan this is cause to like call up friends and relatives and
go to a restaurant to have a chowdown?

My jap gal went for a drinking session with family when she
got her first period. Yes, drinking at 11-12yrs old too...
and all friends and family were like "Omedetou-gozaimasu!..."
(congratulations!)
