I built my dad's computer with a nice set of hardware:
Intel Mobo
P4 560
BFG 6800GTOC
1GB RAM
Antec NeoPower 480
Ever since I put it together, I've been having weird video errors. When the system booted up, at the BIOS logo screen and even in the BIOS, there would be what seemed to be small flickering verticle lines at certain areas of the screen. In Windows, there seemed to be certain spots with horizontal lines. And the weird thing would be that if you dragged a window in a certain spot or when Firefox is maximized, the screen would flicker a bit. Not a constant flicker, more like a "shudder." I tried the monitor on a different PC and did not get that problem. I can't remember if I tried a different monitor on the video card or not. Also, the system would randomly reboot itself and come back with a "Windows just recovered from a fatal error" message. Because this would happen at seemingly random times, from playing a game to browsing the web, I don't think it has to do with heat.
A few months have past since I put it together, and the other day the power went out. We do have really good battery backups on the systems, so it shouldn't have caused anything major. Now we are not getting any video what so ever. I tried two different monitors to see if that was it, but neither monitor works. The computer boots up into Windows. I always thought that if the video card was bad, the BIOS would detect it and wouldn't go any further? Anyhow, I was planning on taking the card out and taking a look to see if I can see anything physically wrong with it...I've had a video card go bad on me in the past, and I could see that the caps were raised and looked ready to burst, and there were other physical signs of malfunction. Does anyone have any opinions or ideas on this? Thanks.
