Bad to mix ram brands?

So I have a new 4 GB (2 GB x 2) kit installed with timings

5-5-5-15 @ 2.1 volts (ddr2 1000) running at 450 mhz.

I also have an older 2 GB (1 GB x 2) kit that was running on the same clocks and volts

5-5-5-15 @ 2.1 volts

Would my system run slower with all 4 dimm slots filled?

No, you would have 6GB vs 4GB. Why would it run slower?

Then again, why would it run faster?

Running a 32 bit operating system, you will only be seeing and using ~3.25gb. Keeping that 2gb kit in there will not make any difference,... and then even if you did have a 64 bit operating system, you still wouldn't notice any real world speed gain from 4gb to 6 gb unless you are doing something very ram intensive like video editing, photoshop of high resolution images and similar.

As far as mixing ram brands will not typically matter at all, mixing ram rated speeds could could, depending on situation, such as one not being able to clock as high as another if pushing to limits,...

Edit: The one thing about keeping the other 2gb in there, it that it will have more power draw and heat, (even if it is a small amount in the overall scheme of things), regardless if the system is actually using it or not.
