Bad to leave my PS3 running 24/7?

Hey,

I am doing folding at home when I am not watching movies / listening to music on my PS3 sling box / bluray player. Will it have any noticeable hit on expected lifespan if I leave it running folding@home 24/7 (with max load due to the application)? It does not seem to get very hot to the touch.

Nah, these things are solid bro. Sony definitely did not pooch it on the hardware the way MS did.

BTW, with winter coming on, the supply air will be cooler and assist it in running cooler yet. Very good design the PS3.

But anyway, ya, the PS3 hardware seems to be rock solid almost a year after its release. Lots of people have been running f@h since March (or whenever it was released back in spring). As far as reducing the lifespan by running it 24/7? We won't really know that until a few more years down the road, if ever.

Lots of people have been running f@h since March (or whenever it was released back in spring).

That is what I needed to know, if the things were going to die in mass proportions due to running it 24/7, we would know by now. I was unsure how long F@H has been out for the PS3.

Ars did a little write up on it back in March, because it spanks most PCs so hard. I should clarify that as being with certain WUs, touchy crowd here, might offend someone 😛

I'm just over all the comments about 360 hardware failures. It's gotten a bit old now seeing as to how Microsoft has made all the right moves to correct it. I keep feeling like I'm stuck in 3 months ago. 😕

They've made the right moves to replace it, but that hasn't stopped it from happening.

I know this is compeltely anecdotal, but I dont know a single person who has had to return their PS3 for any reason. Even on forums, I can think of just a handful of compaints. The only thing I might be a little worried about (that's not really related to your post), is the energy consumpsion. It seems that this thing consumes a lot of energy (relatively speaking). Both consoles. When the new consoles came out, our energy bill went up a little--especially since we got the new Bravia (46-inch).

(Well, there was one person I know who had to return his PS3--Chris Remo--but it was damaged during the shipping phase. It was UPSs fault, not Sony. So, I agree with the reason of the thread--they seem rock solid.)

a majority of the 360 hardware out in use is still faulty, also the refurbished units are still faulty. its still a problem for most. and we still arent completely sure that its been fixed, though personally im banking on it since i bought my falcon.

but back to the topic at hand, the PS3 seems fine in regards to failures, but with any electronics, leaving it on just reduces life no matter what, so say if used sparsely it would last 10 years on average, if you leave it on 24/7, its definitely gonna shorten that. but if its for f@h it might be worth it.

If I offended you I apologize. I also agree it was unnecessary to bring it up. I was trying to use it for a quick and easy compare and contrast. It is just that for myself, the 360 has become to console reliability discussions, what Duke Nukem Forever and Bitboys are to vaporware discussions, the standard, the rhetorical response.

I also would like to apologize to Schadenfroh for hi-jacking his thread.

There certainly isn't any need to apologize, maybe I should've just kept my mouth shut in the first place. You surely didn't offend me. I'm just starting to get annoyed at all the little jabs at Microsoft because of their hardware failures. To be fair, I'm also getting highly annoyed at the jabs at the PS3 and their supposed lack of games. It's just been played to death....I'm tiring of this all-out war between the PS3 and the 360.

I think I just need to go outside. 🙁 🙂

Out of the 5-6 people I know that have PS3, 2 have had to replace them. That includes my friend and me. His console just randomly died on him and wouldn't turn out at all. My console had messed up USB ports (worked in Linux, but not in the PS3 stuff...well, sometimes they did...I think the firmware updated screwed with it).

I think we're just the unlucky ones, since we have really weird/rare problems (I've never heard of mine before). However, replacing them was pretty painless with Sony's support.

Other then that, the console feels pretty rock solid. However, it's almost time for people's warranties to start running out...and I fear another "disc read error" may decide to drop by after that time. 😉
