Hey guys!

I normally don't keep up with consoles but I would like to buy my gf a Wii for her birthday. I know that the Wii has been out for quite a while now and they just released a new controller (?) and a black Wii (?) is their a new one going to be released in the next year or two?

Right now I'm planing on buying used, anything I should look out for?

Thanks folks!

I doubt that any console updates are coming anytime soon, if that's what you're asking.

There aren't any huge issues to look out for used Wii's that I know of. I would just keep in mind that the baseline system is the Console + Wii Sports + Wii Sports Resort + Wii Mote + Nunchuk + Motion Plus. So don't overpay for the older model that is just the Console + Wii Sports + Wii Mote + Nunchuk.

I remember when I sold my Wii on craigslist, some people asked for the serial number because there's a website where you can determine when the Wii was manufactured based on the serial number, so you might try that. I don't think there's huge issues with older Wiis, but you can probable haggle for a lower price if it's an older one.

Nintendo isn't going to be releasing a new console for a while, so I think you're safe.

I think the reason for that has to do something with the ability to downgrade the firmware on newer systems has disappear

Thanks guys! I just wanted to make sure that her new console doesn't become outdated in a couple of months :D

Thanks again!

The only issues I know of with the Wii are with the GPU overheating (caused by leaving WiiConnect24 turned on standby with some models), and disc drive problems. It still seems to be the most reliable out of the current consoles (Wii/360/PS3).

I thought I had read awhile back, maybe on Destructoid, that there was a rumored HD version coming out. Maybe something to do with media streaming or something.

If you'd use it for that.

I was in the same boat awhile back; my wife wanted a Wii. Gotta say that anymore I use it more than her nowadays. But it's for warming up before working out. Still, it's getting its use.

You should be able to get a used one for cheap, hell I've seen best buy selling the new black ones for $149.99 new but that was awhile ago. I think they are $125 used at eb games, at least that way you can get a warranty for like $15 or whatever
