Bad time to build a new computer?

I'm looking to build my first computer fairly soon. Considering the introduction of Vista and DX10, is it a better idea to wait a few months?

I use my computer primarily for gaming, internet and Photoshop/Illustrator.

Unless you need a computer now, it is always a bad time to build a new one. 😉

Something's always better around the corner.

There's price cuts coming in April I believe.

Since you want Vista and DX10, I'd suggest waiting for several things:
1) R600
2) NVIDIA drivers for Vista
3) Some DX10 games
4) Vista SP1
5) April 22nd (rumor) intel price cuts
6) AMD's quadcore (KL8; thats K-"late")

Well, it's coming very very close to me needing a new computer. I've had this one for 4 years or more. This 1.7 GHz P4 is showing its age.

As for Vista and DX10...these are things I'm going to want to have, correct? Is there any debate about new builders NOT moving to Vista and DX10?

<-- Apparently I'm a black man with glasses 🙂 Oh well, fine by me.

Price cuts are the winner in my case, as they're keeping me from doing any current upgrading...

I would say that without a doubt all game developers and hardware companies will embrace DX10 and Vista. It may be a slow transition, just like it was with XP. Also some companies might decide not to develop Vista drivers for their older hardware, so some PCI cards and the like might be unusable.

If you are building new, I would watch for bargains (or price cuts) and go for the latest hardware. Get 4gb of memory because you will need it eventually as well and don't want to try adding memory 6 months from now to match an older kit.

You'll certainly want DX10 sometime in the future, but right now Vista offers more problems than solutions. If you have a copy of XP, I'd use that until problems with Vista are fixed, and there's more drivers available.
