Bad taste to ask friend how big layoffs will affect her family?

HP is having big layoffs, I'm a bit concerned about a friend who both her parents work for HP. Is it bad taste to ask her if that will affect her family?

My good friend's father got laid off and he might if he doesn't jump ship in time. I have talked about it with him openly. As long as you ask from concern and seriously, I see no harm in asking.

I don't believe I said she is a "good friend". We used to be close, but that was when we were both in college together.

It has been a couple years since we were at the same college, I don't live in the same region anymore and people change. I'm pretty sure I can ask her without issue, I was just wondering if anyone else feels this would otherwise be in poor taste.
