It started last night as I just got out of a car of a 2 hour drive and noticed that my neck and shoulders were stiffening up a bit, to the point that turning my head was a bit painful to do.

I took a long hot shower and that made the pain pretty much go away completely. I went to sleep about an hour later at around 11pm, and at 1am I woke up from one of the worst shoulder pains in my life.

It was a sort of inflammation feeling, but it also felt numb, the sort of feeling you get when your foot's asleep but it was in my shoulders. I try to move around, stretch out my shoulders a bit but the pain was so great that at one point I found it hard to breathe and I almost went to the hospital.

Eventually I went back into the shower, turn it to about as hot as it can get and stood there for about 5 minutes which helped greatly. I could still feel the pain but it went away enough that I could fall asleep again..but then at about 6am I woke up again with the same pain, though not as great as it was originally..took an ice pack and iced each shoulder for a few minutes, which made the pain go away and sleep for another hour, until I got up and went to work.

The pain is bearable now, but I can definitely still feel it..and I'm trying to ice it every now and then here at work.

Any tips? I'm trying to think of anything I did that could cause it, but nothing really stands out. Only new thing I've introduced to my workout are 20-set squats (http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/irontamer5.htm) which leaves the weight on my shoulders a bit longer than usual, but I'm not sure if that would be the cause of anything.

Honestly, poor posture during a two-hour drive could put overused muscles into spasm (possible contributor could be the 20rep squat program). If that's the case, just try to make sure you're not slouching horribly and see if it gets better. In this case, I'd definitely apply heat to decrease spasm and reduce overall muscle tone. See how it feels in a couple of days and then re-evaluate.
