Bad sectors repairable?

Software bad sectors can usually be repaired by a low level format. Bad hardware sectors / clusters can not be repaired. If scandisk or another utility claims it can't fix it, you may have to low level format to get rid of them. If you developed 3 megs of hardware bad sectors, then it's time to think about RMA or a new drive.

Well, I normally would chuck it and get a new one, but I got one free of charge and figured I could try and fix it.

Not sure how IDE handles bad sectors, but my Seagate drives + Adaptec SCSI controller will reassign bad sectors to the end of the disk track. So chances are you will never write any data there.
