i recieved a replacement drive from Maxtor today, and I believe that it is bad. the Bios picks it up properly, but windows tries to install it as a PCI device. strangely though, windows system properties shows the drive, but it is totally inaccessible. i haven't had a chance to try it in another computer, but i will today or tomorrow. have other people gotten bad drives as replacements from Maxtor? thanks.

I got a Maxtor replacement once and it generates Ultra ATA CRC errors all the time. But the maxtor drive diagnostic software says that it's ok so I can't exchange it. You problem sounds weird though.

In order to get an RMA from Maxtor, do you NEED to prove drive errors?

(...I've got 2 older (year 2000 manufactured) Maxtors, but still under warranty, and while they don't have errors, they got somewhat louder, one of them noticeably, with a kind of rattle inside; I was thinking to maybe replace them, but would like to know what is the quality of possible replacements before I'd ask RMA)
