currently have a XFX 850W XXX edition (seasonic build).

during gameplay. hwinfo shows the 12V rail drops from 12.144 to 11.880. a 0.264 drop.

currently. cpu is i7-3770K stock, 7970CF factory OC, 256GB SSD, 120mm cpu fan, 120mm case fan, nothing else.

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/XFX-850-W-Black-Edition-Power-Supply-Review/808/7

shows a 0.28 voltage drop drawing 856w. am i drawing close to 800w?

i can only imagine the further drop when the i7-3770k is oc to 4.5, another 120mm case, two 80mm case fan, two 7200 harddrive, and some led lights.

hwinfo may not be accurate. buy yourself a kill a watt meter your setup should be under 600watts on the meter. amazon sells the meters for 20 bucks or so.

19 bucks . I would think your system pulls under 500 watts. you have only 1 hd7970. I have a hd 7990 and it pulls 450 watts with a i7 3770t and a small under clock. I run the setup with a seasonic x660 which is 660 watts.

You're not drawing anywhere close to 800W, you're drawing about 500 watts at full GPU load.

Unless actually getting hiccups or shutdowns, I wouldn't pay too much attention to the voltage drop given that they're just software readings. I'll leave it to others to judge whether a 264mV drop would be acceptable

He has two 7970s... anyway I would recommend the Kill-A-Watt, it's pretty handy. You'll know for sure how much power you're actually drawing.

yeah cf what does that mean duh.

still my hd 7990 pulls just under 450 with a tiny under clock. so he must do 550 to 600 tops with oc

First rule of PSU voltages is don't trust software readings.

Here's a handy flow chart for you.

Does your system work?
Yes = no problem, so stop looking for one
No = problem, so start troubleshooting

Zap.

first rule and flow chart. lol. :biggrin:

yes it works fine. just that that voltage drop is never a good thing.

i will put a multimeter on one of the 12v lead for accurate reading.

Voltage drop is normal. Voltage that drops out of spec is not a good thing.

Is voltage in spec?
YES = don't worry
NO = worry
