Bad pet owners

So I'm taking out the trash to the curb last Sunday night, and next thing I hear is a growl and this black dog charging at me. It came from a house to the left of the one across the street to my home, and had no leash. I probably made the mistake in doing so, but I decided make a dash for it behind my fence, as I also have things in my backyard that I could defend myself with. The dog eventually retreated, but not before I pretty much made it known to the owners (they were some visitors of the neighbor), that they better leave or I'll have their dog impounded.

Fortunately I didn't get bit, but I now realize the best thing to do is to stand still and stand your ground, as running turns you into prey.

Anyone else have any encounters or experience with getting chased/attacked by dogs etc? I don't blame the animal, it was the owners who didn't keep it on a leash, and Dobermans in particular are usually over protective.

I'll be carrying a large stick or bat next time I take out the garbage...

Whatever happens, remember to stay calm, there are too many people that can't remain calm and so that can royally mess up the situation even more.

Have you talked to the house it came from?

Also, before someone says it - he can't sue for this, no damage to show because he's fine.

Dobermans can be very aggressive which is a good trait in a guard dog, but often doesn't make for the best pet & they tend to be bought by people trying to convey a macho tough guy image who encourage the behavior without the proper training to go with it.. the combination gives the breed abad reputation which isn't fully deserved.

When I walk my dog (94 lb Shepard-mix who can take care of himself) I've had quite a few loose dogs charge us & all but one large pit-bull stopped dead when I stood my ground & loudly said NO ... the pit went right after my dog & it would have gotten ugly fast if its idiot owner hadn't been close behind, my dog is socialized from an early age & wants to play more then fight but he'll defend himself if attacked.

Bottom line is that I carry a small legal folding knife when out walking now just in case, but if people were more resonsible it wouldn't (& shouldn't!!!) be needed!

1. you can sue anyone for anything

2. Don't know if there were any witnesses but if there were, thats all he really needs

3. Pain and suffering/mental anguish could be claimed. Its bothering the op enough to come on to a bulletin board and post about it.

Tell the owner to keep that dog at bay. Don't run from dogs, stand your ground and bash them in the head. I used to have a german sheppard, very beautiful dog. I lived in a ghetto area and every now and then in the park a loose pitbull would charge my dog. I remember one time a pitbull charged my dog, so I found a huge log and bashed it in its head before it even got to us. The dog got a mad concussion blow and lay shaking on the gound for like 30 seconds then got up and ran away.
