FS, I wasn't singling out Americans; i think this is a trend for all of the first world.

I did mention the people who are working too hard; but I feel these people are the minority. I see most parents going to casinos, going out, watching a crapload of tv and doing the absolute minimal work. The really hard working people tend to bring kids up in more well off neighbourhoods with better schools, more waspy atmosphere.

Government doesn't get forced to do anything, there is not void except for the trend towards entitlement. People feel the state should look after them, probably comes with patriotism and the need for nuturing, acting like a mother for grown-ups. Anything government does can be done by individuals; usually better as they are not in the business of conforming everyone to the same mold but focusing on people's real needs and choices.

Trash breeds trash which breeds trash. It's a vicious cycle and sad but I laugh at people who claim the government can change it.

Why? They can. They have. If they continue, it won't get any better.

How? The government makes it worse by making these people dependent on taxpayer loot.

Is making the situation worse not a change?

No, actually it is not just an opinion. There are empirical studies which showed that welfare destroyed a lot of black families starting in the '70s under the 'great society.'

Obviously, bad parenting is a serious problem. Look how bad George W. Bush turned out.

I'm sure you meant that as somewhat of a joke, but I think there is some truth behind it. Certainly bad parenting is not prejudice of income.

And this proves exactly what? Were white families similarly destroyed. Were different forms of welfare tried and compared such as simple money aid compared to money and psychotherapy, vocational training, job creation, slum clearance and strict law enforcement, etc etc etc. I gave a bum a dime and he's still a bum says very little at all. We don't do welfare in this country because we need the poor to look down on and to keep the donkeys turning the mill stones.

There was a show on the TV last night about Meth-amphetamines (Spell). In some cities and certain areas what they find is rampant crime can most often be traced back to drug use. They also said the people that suffer the most are the children of the drug addicts. Meth is a very powerful drug and it can ruin your life completely.

Over and over again crime is found to be revolving around Drugs. We have not learned how to deal with this in 50 years.

He's a joke alright but it ain't funny:

1) Respect for the law . . . nope.
2) Respect for those with different points of view . . . nope.
3) Consideration of those less fortunate . . . nope.
4) Respect for knowledge . . . nope.
5) Self-discipline and introspection . . . nope.
6) Use position of authority to provide benefits for those like him . . . of course.

Pretty much prima facie evidence of poor home training.

You mean you're not all warm and tingly inside fighting the axis of evil? Where do you get off not worshiping the Fatherland to give your life some meaning?

We are, IIRC, graduating more virgins than ever, but then we are also turning out little sex fiends, resulting in futher spread of std's and underage preggo's. But that's not what this is really about, just an example of the whole picture. Some kids get to high school barely literate.

Is there another solution to bad parenting, other than governmental parenting?

coal mines.
