Bad notebook screen?

Came across an Acer Extensa 4620-4605 with a splotchy screen. By splotchy I meen it looks like a black piece of glass with white milk spilled on it as it boots (no words appear in the inital boot sequence) , then as windows loads (vista), the previously white splotches appear as purple while the rest of the screen is blurry and double imaged with very slow response. The notebook boots fine, and I even have perfect video by hooking up an external monitor. My main problem is I um unsure if its the screen itself or if its a component connected to it. I have found replacement screens for around $125-150 and I don't mind spending the money to repair it but would hate to waste it on an unnecessary component. It's also out of warranty. Anyone have an idea of what the problem is?

Well, it has intergrated graphics. It's the GL960 chipset with the x3100 Intel GMA. Would it be wrong for me to assume, that because I can get the graphics to work by connecting an external monitor up to the VGA, that the intergrated gfx are acutally working and it is just the screen? I have had it completely apart, to check for cracks, loose connections, etc.. and there is no "video card". All the connections come right off the motherboard. Also, I have 2 other laptops, neither of which are Acers. Are the screens interchangeable, for testing purposes only, or do they not have a standardized connection?

okay, if the laptop has a external port and the boot and OS screens look fine on it, then it's the LCD that needs to be replaced. now you have to look at the laptop, it's market value with a working screen and the cost of replacing the lcd, versus a new laptop.

there's a extremely slim chance, but most likely the other lcd's will not mount or have the same connector that the Acer is using, you could try, either way, you'll have to get a LCD for one of them, regardless.
