Bad Notebook LCD

The LCD on my Acer laptop all of a sudden has non moving horizontal lines on the bottom half. The top half is fine. My daughter was using it at the time it started. She said it locked up and after restarting it had the lines. I hooked up a external monitor and it worked fine.
So I can assume the video drivers are fine. Anybody have any experience with sort of thing? Bad LCD? I looked around and they cost around $300.
