Bad NIC or??

I have a PC with a Linksys LNE100TX PCI NIC. I am not sure if it is the source of my problems but here goes:

I use FTP software on the PC to transfer large files from other PCs to this one because it has a DVD burner.

I find the PC will usually stall out the connection after awhile, or sometimes it works fine. I then try "ipconfig /release" which works, and "ipconfig /renew" which does not. This is the only PC I have that gives me this problem. I have to reboot the PC in order for the LAN connection to work.

This PC also has some RAM issues and BSODs infrequently. I have heard of lousy PCI cards causing this problem.

I don't think anyone can tell you for sure that the nic is your problem. I think the only way to know for sure is to swap it out and see if the problem goes away. Sounds to me like the PC may have other problems as well.

If you know for a fact you have RAM issues, start there by running Memtest 86 from:

Memtest 86

if it tests bad, swap it .. Problem Gone ? ? ... all done .. If not then try reinstalling the Windows TCP/IP
All OK ... ? ? done ... next try the NIC Card ... or if you have a spare NIC Card try it first & see the results
then go from there ... but I think you will find it's the RAM causing all your trouble

I tried memtest 86 and the RAM is fine. I can only use 1 stick of 256MB PC2100 DDR. Any more sticks and it fails to POST - this PC has been known to work in the past. Everything started to change when I installed a Duron CPU.

I know there are lots of problems with the PC, but it has worked fine today (amazingly) w/o crashing or BSODing once I got rid of Symantec Anti-Virus.

I just wanted to know if weak/bad NICs could cause the LAN connection to malfunction in this manner.

If that is the case, then either the mobo got messed up or the real problem is a bad Duron CPU ... Why not reinstall the old CPU (if it's ok)
and see if it works better ? ? ... You may also need to make some changes in your BIOS (perhaps an update or a settings change)
in order for the Duron CPU to work properly with the memory you bought
