...some people now can't bring up that UN report that says Canada is the #1 place to live.

http://canada.com/national/story.asp?id=4EA1D721-D741-4EFF-A11E-704CF4A424E1

Senior government officials confirmed yesterday that the annual ranking of nations by the UN Development Program, a measure of the overall quality of life in 175 nations, will place Canada behind Norway, Sweden, Belgium, Australia and even the U.S., which Canada has consistently led in the past.

I wouldn't put complete trust in some report anyways :)

Very bad news indeed. We've fallen so far, that we are now tied with the US.

Softwood lumber? Oh, yeah, that thing that the WTO and NAFTA said the US was wrong about :D

That's a good attitude :)

Canadians on the Internet used to always mention this particular UN report all the time. This is a huge blow to them :( :)

Anyone who loves their country and holds it up because of a study is an idiot :) Love it for what it is, the most beautiful nation on earth :)

Not yet.

The actual report isnt released until Tuesday.

BTW...Canada.com is part of CanWest communications. And they have a hard core anti-Liberal government ownership. I'm not saying they are lying, but they generally colour the facts a little to make the Liberals look bad. :)

The US, Canada and Belgium have the same score.

Norway achieved a rating of 0.944 on the human development index. Iceland, in the No. 2 spot, was 0.942; Sweden, 0.941; and Australia, 0.939.
Belgium, the United States and Canada all rated 0.937.

I think that's only for one of the scores that is used to compile the rankings. All of the articles state that Canada is behind countries like the United States and Belgium.

From your link:

Measured on the basis of life expectancy, educational achievements and real income, Canada was also surpassed this year by Iceland, Australia, the Netherlands, Belgium and the United States.

However, the official, who asked to remain anonymous, said Canada is penalized under the approach adopted by the UN agency for being a more open and heterogenous country.

Scandanavian countries, with more homogenous societies and greater reliance on the state, have higher rankings in the area of educational achievements, he said.

Czar, your countries are cheaters. I vote we invade and take your women. :D I do wonder why companies stay with the high taxes. Saab could easily move their work elsewhere, no?

Izzy Asper is a hard core Liberal, so you're off on that one. In fact, he's fired Editors for not towing the Liberal line...this might be a reaction to the boycotts, however. I think this has more to do with the UN wanted to "kiss and make up" with the Empire. Never put much faith in UN reports anyway, about as much as I do with anything the US government has to say.

Woot -- Belgium is in the top 5 again. I guess the "Axis of Weasels" is not such a bad place to live :D

They should also take in consideration the quality of the beer of the countries ;)
we would easily get the top spot

"There are two things I cant stand in this world. Intolerance of other peoples culture, and the Dutch."

:D

Seriously though, I'd say if you live in any of the countries mentioned, you're doing pretty good. We should all be grateful for what we have.

I'd be willing to bet that the reasons Canada dropped a few spots are:
1. Sars
2. Madcow
3. westnile virus
4. we live next to the US. ;)
5. Our dollar is worth too much right now, and is wrecking our export economy.

Must be all the legalized marijuana in Europe.

Unlike draconian laws in the US.

Canada's curency is nearing where it was 96.

Good sign to jump back to top spot.

No Isreal Asper is an extremely anti-liberal (not the liberal party), anti-muslem, pro-isreali.
He said himself when he was in Montreal were I live. His objective is to give a good view of Isreal to canadiens. He owns ~ 70% of canada's media!
