Bad Motherboard??? Please help...

I have a Cybermax computer with a MicroStar motherboard. It is a Athlon 700. Recently I have been receiving BSOD's saying "Error Writing to Drive C:......" The hard drive is a Western Digital. I did a thorough ScanDisk and came up with no errors. I downloaded the WD diagnostics software and came up with no errors on the HD. During this process I tried booting to a floppy. The floppy light did not even light up during the boot process and when I went into the BIOS the floppy was not even recognized. The onboard floppy controller was enabled. I swapped out the floppy drive and cable. The drive is getting power.

This is the problem. What is the solution? It sounds like a bad motherboard. Are there any diagnostic programs to test the motherboard? CompUSSR and Worst Buy want an arm, leg, and one kidney to diagnose it. : ) </P>

Thanks!

SiSoft Sandra has a battery of tests included that may shed "some" light on your problem. Not sure you really need it though. After switching the drive and cable did it act exactly the same as before? How did this come up? Were you doing something different? Losing a FDC is pretty rare, but can happen. If you installed the other, working Floppy drive and cable properly and it acts exactly the same as before you are probably shot. You could go into Device manager and remove the Floppy drive there and reboot to see if the Windows reinstallation will solve the problem. Just a shot in the dark. If all else fails you could get an ECS K7S5A mb for the same or less than they want to diagnose your board.
Forgot to ask, did you get the BIOS to recognise the floppy?

Thanks for the reply Buz2b. To answer your questions...

The floppy would not even show up in DOS, the BIOS, or Windows. Weird stuff. The thing that puzzles me is the BSOD's concerning the drive c: and the floppy not responding. I will look for the mobo you suggested. The problem is that it is a Classic Athlon. 🙁

Thanks!

That is really strange. Are the write errors happening (BSOD) when trying to use the floppy? Download SiSoft Sandra and run the Burn in tests. It will test your drives and system pretty well. It probably won't give you the answers but you can confirm the HDD is ok, etc. There are probably some more specific tests there also, I just haven't used it a lot.

Oh, sorry. I think all the SIS 735 boards are Socket A. No help there. Look at the bright side, you can get a Duron 700 or 750 MHZ combo with that board for ~ $100-110 including shipping. Check pricewatch.com. Still a lot less than an evaluation and the inevitable board replacement combined and would be faster too. 🙂
