Ok, been struggling with this system for a week and 1/2.
AMD XP-1600+ w/Volcano 6cu HS/Fan
DFI AD-70SR Moboard (KT266A w/Raid)
Sparkle FSP-300 300w Power Supply
512M Samsung 266-DDR
Radeon 8500 Retail (every driver tried and DX 8a/8.1)
3com 3c905c Nic
Aureal A3D 2.0 Sound
Windows Me (tried Win98 also)
Maxtor 30G ATA-66
CDROM + Burner
The issue is UNLESS I have AGP 2x or lower AND a 4M AGP aperture, I cannot boot up unless set to "Standard PCI Video".
Soon as i install video drivers, I'll freeze upon initial reboot.
I've tried 2 separate GeForce 2's, and I get the same issues. Tried every 4in1 from 428-435. Tried using the 4in1's without the AGP part, and then using the 405c VIA AGP driver instead. Doesn't seem to matter either way. Turbo/Normal, u name it. System runs great otherwise. No errors installing windows, can degfag, burn cd's, move large files from cd-rw to hd and back.
I've swapped DDR ram, and tried every possible combination.
All my timings are conservative to say the least. Have set bus to 100, and tried disabling UDMA or all IDE devices. Hell I think I've tried it all (many more things than I can think of now!).
I've tried disconnecting every peripheral I could to see if it was a power supply issue. Problem remains.
I'm leaning towards the problem being the motherboard, BUT there's still a chance it's the power supply. This power supply is on the AMD approved list for what that's worth, but it's only 300 Watts.
Has anyone ever seen a similar problem??
The *ssholes I bought this from won't swap me out motherboards without me leaving the parts there for them to test for two days. Seems ridiculous to me.
In a nutshell, AGP basically fails unless disabled (4M Aperture does that doesn't it?). Is it a AGP controller failure or a lack of wattage? Do you guys suspect the PS or the MB?
Thanks for any help in this frustrating situation.
