I have 2 256MB RAM sticks installed in my computer but it seems like the "RAM free" drops down to 256MB really quick ( yes, it may Win98 thing, I know).

If I were to load up about 13 browsers, the computer would start struggling to stay alive. Now come on, surely it could do better than that.

Could I have a bad/fried memory stick?

K6-2 550 with 13 browsers open?? That's pretty normal. And as for the amount of physical memory loss during startup. Check what's in your startup list and delete those you don't need.

I guess that someone is going to mention that you should switch to win2k/XP for better memory management!

I'm running win2k, but when I boot I'm using about 256MB, I have a lot of stuff that I keep running all the time. Plus, if your RAM was bad, it wouldn't be getting used at all. :)

I don't think my computer would like 13 browsers open either, they tend to be significant memory hogs. So it sounds like your computer is exhibiting normal behavior.

Hope that helps.

My Startup is clean. I know all the tricks cleaning that up.

Yeah, a 550K6-2. Its a compaq computer but I've customized and upgraded this mofo inside and out. It'd have an awesome uptime too if it weren't for the RAM.
