Bad luck?

I seem to be a bit confused on overclocking. I just bought a new system with these specs:

Gigabyte 845E EXP motherboard
512MB Micron Memory
Pentium 4 1.8A

My friend that had a 1.6 recommended the 1.8 for me. He overclocked to 2.4 with ease. I was wondering why I can't seem to overclock to more than 1.99 (110 FSB)? Did I buy the wrong kind of motherboard or the wrong kind of CPU? Please help! I am feeling frustrated and ripped off.

Oh another thing. In the overclocking thread, a lot of people are saying their default voltage is 1.55 or something. Mine defaults to 1.75 and goes to 1.85.

The 1.6 has a lower multiplier so generally will overclock higher than a 1.8. That being said, you should be able to get more than 110fsb out of it. Your voltage defaults to 1.75? Is that in the bios? What is it set to in the bios? What does it read in Windows and what program are you using to read it? I would highly recommend you don't go above 1.75v as read in Windows.
🙂

i looked into it a bit more and found out that i have the 256k version of the 1.8. Am I correct in assuming that the 1.6A's are the one that most people are succesful with?

Thanks for the quick reply btw.

Ciao, Jimmy

Yeah, you've got a non-Northwood :frown:. I'd exchange it for a 1.6a or 1.8a. And yes, the 1.6a's rock! Get'em while you can, they're on their way out...
🙂

I don't think they would accept an exchange anymore... so I'm ebaying it off. Hope I don't lose too much money 🙁. Just placed an order on that newegg website. Looks like a lot of people got their CPUs from there.

Would you mind answering a few more questions though? I bought PC2100 memory... would I need to get better memory in order to overclock the CPU?

THanks again!

That's cool too. I got my new one from there and it's rockin (see my P4B533-E thread).

The memory question depends on how high you crank the fsb and how much your memory can handle. You should be able to adjust the fsb/memory ratio to compensate for that. 🙂
