Well, first to the relevant specs:
Albatron Px845Pev Pro with Realtek AC'97 onboard (original driver from HP)

As the title says, no problem with playing Video or Mp3 sound, but in-game sound is really sucky.
Oddly enoguh not in video cut scenes and stuff like that, only in-game surroundings, steps, shots, backround music.
This occurs in WoW, Steam CS 1.6, Rome:Total War... Odd too, i think in Battlefield Vietnam its not an issue.

So well, my question is of cours: How do i fix it? Is it even fixable...?

I had no problem with my old ASRock K7vt2 on board sound, never even thought about buying a sound card... As i said, Video and Music sound playback is just fine...
But to discripe how bad the CounterStrike sound for example is: Just imagine you take a pair of crappy headphones, stuff them in a tin box, put a blanked over it and crank it up real loud. thats about what it sounds like....

Any suggestions?

the onboard sound is very cpu dependent and i heard the problem in various ways during intensive games, if you add in any soundblaster card, your problem would be solved perm. try out with even any add in sound card and the problem should be gone, just remember to disable on board sound.

Agreed, buy yourself a SoundBlaster. There's no way to "fix" the problem, onboard audio sucks. If you want to go on the cheap, you can buy a SB Live! or Audigy PCI card and you'll be in business.
