never pay msrp! especially a ford :D

find out the invoice, dest, incentives, and holdback and negotiate from there.

I saw a preorder for sale on ebay for a prius. I couldn't believe the bid was up to like $1500, just for the opportunity to get the prius when it comes in stock.

If you want the car as soon as it comes out, pre-ordering can't hurt anything. You put $1000 or $1500 down, place your order, and when the car comes you negotiate a price. If you aren't satisfied with the offered price, or for whatever other reason (don't like the color, etc.), you pocket the $1500 and walk away. I did this when I bought my A4 about five years ago (when they were really hot), and when the dealer didn't move down from MSRP, I walked away with the cash.

Look at it this way: you put money down to guarantee yourself the car if you like it, and if you don't, you aren't any worse off than you were before.

Too late to pre-order for the Elise nowadays, if you want to get the car in under three months. :(

Uhm...why would you want to buy a car right off the bat? I'd wait a few months at least...really until the next year or something to see if any problems come up. Just like with new computer parts (well, this was more true a few years/farther back, but still), it may look amazing at first, but after everyone jumps in, problems pop up...and suddenly that hot product is pretty crappy.

I spoke with my dealer about it, there will be no wait and they will have plenty to go around. They will also desparatley try to sell you an 04 instead.

You'll probably end up paying whatever the dealer tells you. If there is alot of demand for the car and they think they can get over MSRP, they will ask you to pay it. You don't have to and you can walk away, just make sure whatever you sign says you can get your money back.

When I saw the thread title I thought it said

"bad idea to pre-order a cat?"

there's been a lot of cat threads lately.
