Bad idea to consider this car?

Looking for a used car and this 2018 Honda click all the boxes BUT wtf happen to the ceiling? Is there anything I can do to reverse it back to the original color?

Talk me out of it.

Either they've replaced the entire roofliner with that red one, or they've glued some red felt over the original. In either case, reverting the roof color will not be easy and likely require getting an entirely different roofliner, including for the sunroof cover.

Guess it settled, don't think I can handle the red in the long run.

Good call. If they've simply adhered this red covering over the original, typically the adhesives used for that will have ruined the underlying original roof liner. Unfortunate you won't be able to just peel it off.

I replaced the roof liner in a Honda one and it's a lot of work. Took me maybe 5-6 hours plus $20 in glue and headliner fabric. It's not a difficult job, just a lot of monkeying around trying to get the roof liner out and then you need to scrape off the old liner, which is typically glued on with 3M adhesive and does not easily peel off. You could have an auto upholstery place do it but it would probably cost a few hundred.

Typically we can get that done for less than $400, if the headliner can come out without removing glass. Sometimes wrestling them out of a door opening can result in a crinkle here and there. The best time to do it is when the windshield needs replacing.

To have someone do this professionally would cost you around $500-700.

To have this done professionally would also require a lot of flat brimmed baseball hats with the tags still on., an inability to pass a drug test and also some surprise items hidden in the seat cushions.
Don't know what model Honda this is but some words that appear in my head are
Repossessed
Auction
Arrest warrant
Project car for influencer channel on tiktok but just found out that mom found their shroom stash and that they finally have to go get a real job and pay rent.
Their for he has to abandon the project of making his honda interior look like an 80's buick

Makes you wonder if something happened to the original, unless the previous owner just had a serious lack of taste and judgement.
It's subtle but from the two photos, the car looks kind of dirty for a 2018. I guess you can have the cloth interior detailed, but they must have done a number to the headliner for it to be replaced so soon.

It doesn't look subtle at all.
Looks filthy to me.

I didn't mean the current job. I meant to pull it out and fix it.

Now I miss my Brady wagon again though it wasn't that pimped. I wish they would make thin steering wheels again and bring back one finger driving.

My worst car buying decision, a red 1990 Ford Probe with red interior. The interior faded to an orange color after just a year and the clearcoat started to peel.

Not my car but looks identical to when mine was new.

Just my inclination, but I wouldn't make the color of a headliner a make-or-break criterion for buying a used car.

For me, the important things are those that make it run reliably. Was it ever in an accident? Did the prior owner abuse the vehicle? Did he dutifully perform the regular maintenance? Given the mileage on the car, when could I expect to replace an alternator? A waterpump? A radiator? a CV joint?

So on and so forth. Now -- if that headliner were part of the exterior, or it was something visible from outside the car, maybe I'd look for alternatives. But I'd certainly look for alternatives if it had an accident history or showed signs of abuse by a previous owner.

No idea, never check it out in person. The red is just too much. And with the lack of inventory, I don't think I can afford one in the near term.

TIL I aren't getting alert in my own thread if people are quoting each other.
