Bad idea to buy a pre-owned XBox from EBGames?

And try not to get a Thompson drive, if possible.

Will it show that on the bottom?

No, you will need to power up the unit and eject the dvd tray. The differences between the trays will determine which drive you have.

for the price difference I would just get a new one. The used ones at my EB are like $129 and the bundles are $149.99.

The new bundles don't use the Thompson drives so you want have to worry if you got one or not. Although not all Thompson units are bad. I still have one from launch that works great.

And all new xboxs should not have the thomson drive any longer. Maybe there's a production date somewhere on the box/serial ?

i still have the thomson drive and it works fine, btw... not the best for modded boxes of course. 😉

Absolutely do not buy pre-owned consoles. I picked up a pre-owned ps2, brought it home, and it would freeze after about 10 minutes. Exchanged it for another, and it too had problems. I went back and demanded that I could trade it back in towards a new, which they bent on for me. Another guy in my building had the same problems with refurbs from there. The price difference is so minimal it's not worth the risk of having a 15 day warranty versus the retail warranty.
