Bad idea to build a Nixie Clock from a kit?

Define minimal. I designed my own clock from scratch and fabbed a couple of PCB's for it. Feel free to ask for pointers if you go for it.

Doesn't look too bad.

This is one i designed myself... you can tell i fucked up because the tubes were supposed to go the other way! doh...

Very Cool! Minimal = Less than 6 months experience. My soldering skills aren't bad, I just haven't been doing it very long.

Looks good! 🙂

I did it myself, just ordered some replacement tubes because one of the numbers went bad. It's actually quite easy to do.

Any recommendations on a kit other than the one in the OP? Trying to stay under $100 if possible.

Not a bad idea at all. I cannot imagine it'd be that difficult and I've considered ordering a kit myself. However, it depends on the kit. I mean I have seen some with 100's of pieces.

Also, your best resource for help in building one will be the yahoo group NEONIXIE-L. I don't regularly post there, but I monitor it and there are a ton of experts.
