In the device manager , I am getting this message
This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)

If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system.. How can I find out whats causing this problem .

I have nec dvd burner, when I put a dvd rom in it doesn't auto play even though I enabled it and the light doesnt come on when the dvd is being read, is that normal.

IDE channels normally takes IRQ 14 & 15. Of course, the memory address can be different depending on system setup. You can either try manually assigning IRQ or memory address by going to Device Manager or you can try posting your system setup and we can take a look.

you have installed some hrdware, addin card, or software that is taking memory address ranges or IRQ normally reserved for IDE.
seems to be more prevalent with laptops - PCMCIA cards

You could try NonPnP O/S setting in Bios and "enable ESCD", which will reset on next boot to disable, manually assigning IRQs or switching around card slots (nothing in PCI slot 1)

I'm guessing some goofy add in card - but you gave no info

these guys say remove ghost devices

You could try a repair install of XP from CD - next "R" option" after recov console.
You could have conflict by having an onboard NIC and add in NIC
You could have a conflict with an add in soundcard and onboard sound.
You could turn off USB as a test in bios
Make sure com ports are turned off

etc etc
